Mahogany Lacquer Peeled...

Well, I got this neck from the Screamin' Deals section with a small flaw in the finish on the headstock. While installing the tuners, the finish got more and more white/haze which is the tell tale sign of peel/crack.
Long story short, what is the minimum I need to do to get this Mahogany neck ready? I've peeled the finish off (still need to clean the nut area). I've got some color tone guitar lacquer and wouldn't mind dyeing it red either.
Any help is appreciated!!!!

Thanks! That does seem like the best option. I'm currently testing some color grain contrast (rub & buff) and then wipe off with tru oil. If it doesn't work on to my liking, it seems like a couple coats of Tru Oil seals and coats good.
Next Question: should I apply my vinyl headstock decal prior to coating? or in between coats?
