Magnet swaps

magnetswapping really appeals to me. i think of swapping the A5's of the prails for an A8 and a ceramic magnet...

It says there are two A5 bars in the P-Rails. I wonder if they're the same size as a typical magnet.

I personally stay away from ceramic because I don't think it's good for clean tones.

I know that thats the case, so first I'll just take a good look. but ceramic is really my kinda tone. the duncan custom delivers great clean tones, at least, for me. the bluesbucker aswell. great pickup! huge mismatch in coils by the way. one is just hitting 2.5k, the other almost 9.4! but man, the tone. the tone... (but not enough output or complexity for other stuff besides ROCK). I've always loved ceramics. I really like my motherbuckerset, but those are extremely difficult to wire to its full capacity (though I should give it a try once...)

ah look what I found:

Have you tried the A8 mag at all in anything? I don't know where you get the idea that an A8 is mushy. I think you may have lost your credibility for good now hahaha. ;)

Anyway, the only thing you can do with the P-Rails in experiment. Kind of hard to predict what changing it to two powerful and different magnets will do to it's tone.

Anyway - I had a Custom in my LP for nearly a year and never liked it that much. I tried it with an A8 in it and it was like taking a blanket off of my amp. It was kind of like when Dorothy opens the door in the Wizard Of Oz - and suddenly everything is in Technicolor hahahah :laughing7:

I can't recall having said that I felt the A8 is mushy. in fact, I dig it... maybe I was somewhere along the line not clear, but ok...

I think that the coils of the prails are really what i need; the wide 'field' of the p90 coil and the smaller, with the mismatch; that gives it that broad , complex tone, with those great harmonics. but that A5!!! its just so...alnico5 like!
