My wife wants a fretless bass, and I came across this on CL.

What do you all think?

How is cherry as a tonewood?

I personally have never heard of cherrywood being used a body wood, so i don't know, but just glancing over the bass, my assumption is:

Rosewood fingerboard. (Mellow tone)
(Because of the Rosewood..) He most likely has it strung with flatwounds. (mellow thumpy tone)
Precision pickup (Not growly like a Jazz)
Tug bar (tells me he was "thumping" with his thumb instead of fingerstyle)

The bass should be really mellow regardless of the body wood.

Was there a specific tonality that your wife was after?

Buy it.  The bridge, tuners, pickup, straplocks, and pickguard makes more than $300 in parts.  Even if the neck and body are junk this is a good deal.

If I lived there and were in the market I'd grab it and put a fretted exotic neck on it.  Instant awesome bass for under $500.

HUGE -1
Stay fretless!

Does the neckplate look weird to you guys?

It looks a little narrower than usual to me.

It does to me, too.

Oh well, she says she wants it, so I'll shoot them an e-mail.

The owner had this to say about the finish:

"I spray painted it with a poly but the wood slightly soaked it in. Its smooth but it has some imperfections."

I assume that wouldn't affect any aspect of the bass other than having a crappy finish, right?
