Look out Warmoth, your days are numbered.

Oh come on, where's your sense of fun?  It's a toy.  I don't think they actually mean to convert committed musicians to playing paper guitars.  A lot of people like to fantasize about being a rock star but don't have the drive (or cash/willingness to spend a lot of cash) to actually persue music.  Lots of little kids have toys, you wouldn't say "Why doesn't that kid get a real Makita instead of a plastic drill?" or "Why doesn't that kid just adopt a baby instead of playing with a stupid doll?".  It's just for make-believe.  It would be a great prop if you didn't have a guitar and you wanted to be Slash or someone like that for Halloween.

The commercial is stupid, with the whole steam-rolling of a real band thing, and the product is over-priced, but there's nothing wrong with the idea.

+1 for rationalism!

Rationalism? Only fools use rationalism!

My only issue is that for about 150 dollars you can put a real electric guitar in a kids hands.(not saying a GREAT one, but one made of wood.) that seems a small price to pay to at least pretend to take the opportunity to learn something.

I'd still use one of these as a decoration though.

I got the notion they were marketing to teenagers though. I would certainly hope that by the time a kid is the age those actors in the video/commercial are, he/she would be over playing with toys like this.

I still have an entire shelf of toys that I mess with. to be fair I'm a 25 year old Virgin who loves SciFi.

But I still play with toys.

Just... my Optimus Prime is made of metal and cost 80 bucks.

If someone ran over my band equipment with a steam roller, they would want to be an olympic sprinter. I would hunt them to the end of days.    :laughing7:

My nephew plays a Tele (a Highway One ironically enough) that got run over by a truck.

My eight year-old loves these things. My twelve year-old thinks they're stupid, but he already has his own electric guitar. My wife, who is completely non-musical, loves stuff like this because it lets her get the feeling of playing music. I think if you're in one of those categories, then you're the target market for these. Just because there are older/teenage kids in the ads doesn't mean that's the target market. Younger kids see older kids playing with that stuff on TV and they think 'hey, that's COOL.'

I think it's funny that people get so annoyed by stuff like this and Rock Band. There's a difference between playing music and experiencing music. The Paper Jamz and Rock Band toys are for the latter. I find it hard to believe that anyone would think that they're actually playing music while using one of these. But I think it's great that these are out there so that more of the population get to experience music.

Exactly.  I don't have any desire to play most sports out there, but it's still fun to play them on the Wii.  A lot of people don't really want to commit the time into being a musician, but might think it's fun to pretend once in a while.  And hey, maybe some of those people will decide that they had so much fun pretending that they will get a real guitar some day.  My friend played the drums on Rock Band so much that she ended up going out and getting a drum kit and signing up for lessons.

How much time in jail I'll spend if I hit a bullet in the head of the genious who built it? :laughing7:

depends on if you get a judge that's also a musician, or not...

I had seen something like this before, but I couldn't remember where til I watched one of those "Metal Mania" music video blocks on late-night VH1 Classic.....

I also think that this might be where Gibson came up with the concept of the Reverse Flying V

The only thing I don't like is when people say "hey, you play guitar right? Let's play guitar hero. You should be good at it!"

Which is hilarious because my neighbor is a freakin amazing guitarist and can't play guitar hero even if his life depended on it.

By "guitarist" you mean "bassist" right?  It mostly about keeping time

(comment added only for the lols)

Even w/out the LOLs, that statement is true.  I wish more bass players would realize their instrument is as much (or more) rhythm and time as it notes.
I love the rhythm section
as far as I am concerned, soloist can go to hell
when the band hooks up, and you see the rhythm section come together, suddenly the bass, rhythm guitarist, drummer, and what ever other instruments are in the groove, responding back and forth with each other while allowing the Singer to set the dyamics of the song, The mood changes, the entire vibe is set by the song. the crowd gets into it as they feel the beat, the are infected with the swing and the rhythmical moves within it's being. A tornado of sound is created that lifts the arena to new highs and an explosion of melody comes from it.
After the song ends you soloist is pissed because he got lost, not knowing how to adapt to changes and knowing nothing but Power chords could not solo over a 11th, 6th/4th. major7th , Minor walk down change up if his life depended on it.
However the entire rhythm section did the change on the fly as it developed and the singer made did such a stylish walk over it the crowd went nuts.

It's a little known secret, but .. even guitar is. This is something I've been pondering and paying especially close attention to lately. Why is it that AC/DC rocks harder than all the 'harder' metal bands with mountains of uber gain guitar mush? AC/DC is a funk band where you move your head instead of your hips. They know how to make the holes louder. Really loud. I'm convinced that many of the guitar hero's would be slaving away in oblivion without an equally gifted drummer & bassist. And also that you don't have to be some guitar god to make music like that. You need to be competent with a well put together rhythm section.

Woah, I'm soapboxing. Sorry.

yes, One thing about ACDC is they have a Rhythm section that is SOLID as a rock, and the soloist has training and knows his stuff, He wrote the riff for thunderstruck off a classical guitar study.
And as far as Rhythm sections go, more guys should Soapbox about them.

Oh shit....
