Liquitex acrylic for body?

Hi all,

Planning a build soon with a painted alder strat body and I plan to involve my young kids in the painting process. I don’t have an extensive home shop setup so I’m looking for something safe and easy to apply with a minimum of offgassing.

Has anyone used Liquitex water based acrylic paint sprays on a guitar body? This product caught my eye, with the Liquitex gloss or satin varnish as the clear coat on top of it.

Ha not really. At least not any time recently. I’m ok with it not coming out looking flawless. Though the photo of the body below looks great!

So your plan is to have your kids paint a guitar body for you then cover it with a clear top coat ...

Cool, do you know what design your kids want to paint? Have them paint a picture of Dad? LOL.

Also, why not something more common like minwax polycrylic? Why Liquitex? Are you trying to promote them? I've never used it, I guess that's why I never heard of it.

Also, for informational purposes, where did you get the body? And what kind of neck are you going to get?

ha I’m definitely no shill I found the brand I think on an older forum or Reddit thread. Looking for something water based with solid colors in a spray can. I’d be doing this with nitro if I had a better setup and the kids weren’t involved. I’m thinking I’ll go with the minwax polycrylic for the clear coat, but for solid paint colors I need something other than minwax, right?

Also planning an alder body, probably maple or roasted maple neck. Not planning to paint or add anything to the neck beyond what Warmoth does.

there was a forumite from hong kong ... name of hendrix ... who did some very fine painting, It might be worth doing a search of this website for some of his work if you're interested. I've painted paintings with acrylics, and it seems like I could cover them over with anything, never have though. I have covered decoupage with poly, no problems, but that was paper glued to wood. The secret is to make sure whatever's underlying is dry. .

Don't over think this. Just have your kids paint it, then cover it with the poly.

Why don't you start a build thread and take pictures. It'll help memorialize it for you.

As I recall, he used Winsor and Newton Acrylics.

Thanks for the advice wife and kids got me a nice Warmoth gift certificate for my birthday so probably will be taking the plunge in the next couple of weeks with the order. Right now the plan is to add a few colored stripes on top of a white base coat in their favorite colors, with them doing the spraying. Though tempting to just have my young daughters just paint whatever they want, haha.
