Hi,
This is New Guinea Rosewood (Narra), I would like the grain to stand out. I plan on it being darker with the grain being almost black. Much like Tonars flame job (That is my fav so far). First, should I fill the grain? I don't plan on having a reflective surface, more like satin. Second, How smooth should I sand to? 1000 or more? Third, what would be the best way to do it? Stain dark and sand back, torch it?
Thanks for your help. I'll post some progress pics.

Who made that? I like the recess inside the horn!

what is the wood like? oily? heavy?  If it is anything like regular rosewood, it will be tricky to finish (I did twice)

but uhm... why would you go for rosewood that looks like swamp ash???????

Thanks. The body was made by Southeast Guitars. It weighs around 4 lbs or so. It's not oily at all.  I got it because I like the grain pattern of Swamp Ash and the dark tone of Rosewood.

Its been said that you can use black grain filler for Pop.. and I've also see that ash will give some Snap to the tone.  I'm thinking... if you just twisted the wiring to the pots, you'd have plenty of Krackle too.  At that point, just add some milk, a little sugar if you like, maybe some sliced strawberries and/or bananas.  I'm saying all this, because Telecasters aren't just for breakfast any more, but ya know... they're still best that way.

I'd mix up black and brown grain filler in about a 1-3 ratio black to brown.  That will give you a very dark chocolate color.  Fill, and fill and fill and fill... until its smooth as a the inside of yer girlfriends thigh.  Then you can clear coat it (the Tele, not the thigh) with lacquer du jour (Deft or Cabot, or... whoevers).  If its not "amber" enough like ash can be, a very light shot of Zinsser bullseye amber shellac RUBBED into the body with denatured alcohol on a tampon (yes, its called a tampon....for French polishing) - BEFORE the clear lacquer.

The Telecaster, along with Shredding Wheat, is part of a balanced breakfast.
Don't forget to sop it all up with the "tampon"....

Eewwww!  That kind of ruined the whole breakfast cereal theme doncha think?

Not if you have strawberries on that Shredded Wheat...

That just made it worse

That way at least we can be upfront about it!

OK the hijackers have been neutralized. I dyed black and grain filled with black grain filler and sanded back. The end grain didn't hold on to much. Sanding back is a pain. I planned on doing this again before I went on to the red dye. If I fill it again do I need to use sanding sealer prior to the color dye? Also I read here that TransTint fades. That is what I have been using.  :sad1: The red I'm after is as close to Crimson as I can get. How does Minwax Cherry look? Would that be close?

Thanks for your input. Hijackers beware!

That's quite lovely, but a good deal darker than I expected you would go with it - if that chocolate shade is due to the filler, I'd be very interested to see what happens after you sand it.  Even so, a very handsome axe.
