Lets hear it

My point is very few people are "overrating" those guys as guitar players. They're not going to up there on various guitar player lists.

The only person I feel that NEEDS to be included in this list is Kerry King. His playing is intentionally awful and noisy and it bugs the hell out of me. There are many Slayer songs that I could like if it weren't for KFK (and to a lesser extent, Jeff Hanneman) wanking it up with his so-called "atonal chaos." I also find his "I'm so metal" attitude to be really annoying. Even photos of him unbearable. Gah.

But if I were to compile a list of overrated guitarists, it would contain the cast of characters that shows up every month on the cover of every guitar magazine out there (EVH, Zakk Wylde, Dimebag, Hammett, Vai, etc.). That's why I don't read them anymore.

I am not a big fan of Clapton. Most of his stuff is a bit boring to me. But, his solo on Roger Waters' Hitch Hiking album, 4th song (Sexual Revolution) is one of my all time faves.

I'm just going to say I enjoy Eric Clapton's work. He is best at sounding like himself, but I enjoy that sound, and have plans to see him perform with Daltrey in April.

Not to mention that his Unplugged session is probably one of the best things ever put on film. I'm not a huge Clapton fan though. I like him well enough to not put him on an overrated list but he's far from a favorite of mine. But Unplugged just flat out rules. The planets aligned that night.

I enjoy his Unplugged album too. Tears in Heaven means a bit extra to me, since my mom had a stillborn girl right around the same time that song came out. I didn't like the album at first, but that was because I wanted to hear Layla, but not the acoustic version. I like both renditions now.

Buckethead - can't believe Gibson has his signature LP...

Mark Tremonti - can't believe PRS has his signature guitar

Ace Frehley - not a single solo or riff I can remember...

Eric Clapton - his stuff is not "blues" enough for me. It's missing something... soul, dare I say?!

John Mayer - Hate him, can not stand him. he should just sing

In addition to Keith Richards, Santan and Kurt Cobain, I'd add:

John Fogerty
Bruce Springsteen
Neil Young

IMHO, these guys are the epitome of overrated.

Other than Santana, are any of those guys known as primarily guitarists? I don't think so.
Whether they are or not, they still belong on the list....Although I do like Fogerty's stuff from CCR...

my most overrated list

John Mayer, a very pretty clone
Eric Johnson, the most boring of that whole crew
Peter Green, his good nights were Clapton's bad nights
Larry Coryell, worst free concert ever
Jerry Garcia, also on my favorites list for his work from 66-77, on this list most of what he did after that

and I'm gonna stick up for Santana, it's not easy for us cats to live on this spiritual plane with you guys harshing our mellow :)

Buckethead .. he is so wierd .. I can't stand him! + he's not even that good

Can't take anybody seriously with a bucket on his head..
It can get a little annoying when artists hold on to silly gimmicks like that..
just like slash.. ditch the stoopid hat/hair/outfit... you look like a caricature of yourself!

maybe less extreme example is brian may... I love him, but he looks exactly the same now as he did in 72!  a grandpa version of himself in his glory days :)

I love Muse but I think that Matt Bellamy gets a little more praise than he deserves.

I put him on my favorite list. Not because I think he's great, but because he's very creative.  :dontknow:

I find it even harder to name 5 guitarists I dislike or think are overrated than it was to think of 5 I like. Essentially the reason is that I care so little about any of the 'big name' rated guitarists or the kind of music they make that I don't really pay enough attention to any of them them to have an opinion or to recognise the difference between them.

Clapton- just never got into his music that much
Page- "no Stairway!!!!"
Yngwie- too many notes, not enough feel
Angus Young- used to love his playing, now it is just to repetative
Tommy Thyer- No one can replace Ace

That's so true - I read an article that Tommy, who was Gene's personal assistant at the time, had to "reteach" Ace Frehley his solos the last time they hired Ace for that reunion tour.  But if you listen to the CD of Paul/Gene/Tommy/Eric remakes that came with the new Sonic Boom, he is a mere shadow of Ace.  It is really too bad that Ace Frehley is so self-destructive because he was really something in his heyday...

Sorry Mully, but # 1  on my list is EVH.  The dude made four good records, all but one of them containing straight up filler material, and that was more than twenty years ago.  The first VH record was the first record I bought.  It blew me away.  I loved it when I was 12, and I love it still.  Everything since then in my opinion has just been a slide downhill into mediocre, middle of the road radio music.

I have to agree with most of this.
