I promise to take no offense at any of these.  Reading through the "Top 5" thread made me think of this and surely some others were thinking it too, but lets hear who you think is overrated, or who you just can't stand.  Kind of an "Anti 5" list.  Mine are

Eric Clapton
Carlos Santana
Jimmy Vaughn
Jack White
John Mayer

I'm sure I'm bringing on some scowls here, but I honestly intend no malice.  :toothy11:

Mine are

Carlos Santana (similar sounding solos, teaming with other artists I hate for annoying #1 hit songs)
Jimi Hendrix (Only like about 2 songs.  The rest I just don't "get" I guess...)
Zakk Wylde (His acoustic and piano work, I really like, but his solos sound pretty much the same all the time.  Besides, the guy is a billboard now.)
Keith Richards (Overpraised.  Should be dead.  Repetitive)
Kirk Hammett (Needs to learn melody instead of "Hey, if I play more notes, chicks will do me!")

Didn't think to mention it before, but I think it's more interesting to read why someone thinks the way they do in these listings. . .

Angus Young( Too much Austrainlian for bieer)
John Mayer ( All he does is play token guitar styles, he has none of his own)
Emo people( Too suicidal and strange sexual orientation, even worse guitar playing)
Steve Vai ( I'm too embarrassed to admit that I like him, because he is SO lame. When I saw that guitar movie he was in with karate kid I almost quite playing guitar altogether)
Zakk Wylde ( Not, I like him: the way he strings shreds together and moves from one to the next is masterfull. And I DO like pinch harmonics every 2 seconds!!! He is on a different level. Plus I like his bad a** mother f'er persona) :)

+2 on Kirk Hammet!

Steve Vai....used to love his creativity...now all he does is masturbate to the back drop of orchestras...sounds like elevator music too me...Check his jam in Minneapolis on Palladia ...with an "Orchestra" ... boring...talk about a disappointment......I wouldn't have even released that after seeing it.....oh well I guess you gotta reach out to new listeners if your gonna keep paying the bills, and in this recession Im thinking Orchestra goers probably have the most money....very dull.

John Mayer....If it wasn't for his connections to peopel like Sheryl Crow and everyone else who got behind and promoted his lame music we wouldn't even look twice.

Yngwie Malmsteen....My first serious guitar hero obsession....what happened.....I loved the first 3 albums and some tunes on others, but do ya think you could grow a little and do something outside the Harmonic minor realm.....sheese...My ears are bleeding already.

Santana....quit with the spiritual mumbo jumbo...we don't care.... we came to see you shred....and I have to second the teaming up with the lame ass singers and tunes.....I get it.....it sounds cool to do something main stream......What about doing some wood shedding and writing some killer tunes of your own again....God knows ya got the talent.

Eric Clapton......everytime I see you, someone else in your band takes the solo.....I know you've been there and done that, and your a Huge credit to the blues, but I wanna see you fricken tear it up sometime...Your ealier stuff just smokes....You woulda thought being on tour with Stevie Ray woulda moved you a little...

Satriani....Can't knock ya..you fricken Blow...but don't think you can play anything that resembles blues..because anything I've ever heard you write that even insinuates Blues is not even close...sorry the truth is the truth...and that goes for any of them 90's rockers who suddenly tried to lay out some blues jams when Stevie Ray came onto the scene...LameO....just because your using the pentataonic scale dosn't make it blues.

These comments are purely personal and for entertainment purposes only, ....as should I meet any of the above I will shower them with respect and admiration...hehehe :laughing7:

my opinion could be a little offensive to some, and I don't have the time to motivate right now:)

#1 would be Keith Richards anyway, for obvious reasons :)

then there are a bunch of good guitarist that are not as special to me as some people seem to think, like Slash, Eric Clapton, Angus Young, etc...

I just envy any musician with the talent, skill, and luck to be able to make a great living making music and going on tours. As long as the music means something to them and I can relate to it i could care less how original or technical they are, music exists to entertain and im easily amused.  :headbang: :headbang1:

So i have no controversial hate/love lists

I think anybody who calls any rock guitarist anywhere a "musical genius" is highly overrating that person.  Unless of course they say that about yngwie.. and thats not because he's good or not, but because he is a HUGE theory nerd.

people who call Yngwie a one trick pony are overrated... these guys usually prefer the likes of  SRV, who's a great guitarist, but lets face it, when you think of it, blues itself is a bit of a one trick pony genre...

also an overrated statement: "my favorite average guitarist has more feeling and emotion in one note than *insert technically skilled guitarist* when they play 5000 notes per minute"
makes me want to punch them in the teeth

Knowing theory - even knowing it very well - doesn't make him a genius. Only learned.

As for my list:
Satriani - I used to like him when I was first starting to play guitar. He's insanely talented, but he's only gotten more uninteresting as time goes on.
Vai - In my opinion he is perhaps the most talented guitarist in the world...but also very, very boring.
Malmsteen - I've never found any appeal in anything he's done.
SRV - Good, definitely, but the music just doesn't spark my interest.
Eric Johnson - He plays beautifully, and here and there it's a great listen...but if I try to listen to an entire album of his, I'm likely to either doze off ot wretch...or both.

I pretty much have the same list as exalted for all the same reasons. Technical guitar really really bores me. However, since some people (not many here) rate Kurt Cobain as a 'great guitarist' because he 'played with so much feeling' I have to add him as my #1 most overrated guitarist. Not only did his playing suck, it was also boring. That said, I'd put Neil Young as one of my favorite guitarists, so what do I know?  :dontknow:

I think my top 5 hate/overrated list would be

Zakk Wylde ( I hate his attitude and all his stuff sounds the same. I HATE HIS TONE and listening to him talk makes me want to vomit)

Kirk Hammett ( Hate his tone and his style. all his solos sound the same and I dont think he compliments James Hetfield at all, who I like)

Hendrix ( just sounds like a bunch of noise to me most of the time)

C.C. DeVille (I dont know why but I just dont like him.)

Mark Tremonti ( CREED)

Carlos Santana, and it's not close for me. I'm admittedly not the biggest fan of 60's rock, but I can see why people like Clapton, Page, Hendrix and all the big names of that genre. But everything about Santana--his tone, his music, everything--I just find annoying. Seems like a nice guy but that's about it.

Most underappreciated award I'd have to give to Johnny Winter.

He had a knack for playing the right thing at the right time which fit what he was doing, and there's something to be said for that. He got the job done for Nirvana in a way that many guitarists never do for their bands. More than that, I'm not sure who I'd have had replace him for a better result than what they got... sometimes the shoe fits.

I haven't liked anything Clapton has done outside of Cream. And though I like Cream it doesn't really blow my mind from a guitar standpoint. I find his playing boring.

Steve Morse is probably the best guitar player ever, but I can't get into his music. He's a like a machine.

Anyone that does a lot of sweep picking. I just don't like the sound of it. I find it to be more like a trick than something actually musical.

Never liked Zakk Wylde - was kind of bummed when he replaced Jake E. Lee back in the day.

Most modern day blues/ rock guys. I find most blues really boring.

Petrucci is really bland and boring, from the little I've heard.

1. Yngwie (boring)
2. The Jonas Brothers (self-explanatory)
3. John Mayer (boring, not original)
4. All those "punk rocker" idiots who think they are awesome
5. Kirk Hammett

Agreed all but Angus..
Add Steve Vai for me, him and Hammett obviously didn't listen to Satriani's advise on the 11 note rule..Zakk was good in his early years with Ozzy, but has since then became very repetitive and no emotion in his playing. Malmsteen never cared for, he just plays a lot of scales and arpeggio's.... :tard:

Well, as opposed to the other thread, I'm glad that Eddie Van Halen hasn't shown up here.

Ok, my "Top 5 Can Do Without" guitarists....

Kurt Cobain: I'm sorry, I gotta go with whoever said he was boring and just flat out sucked. Nirvana is the largest pile of dog dung I've ever had the misfortune of hearing.

Yngwie Malmsteen: Most bloated, egotistical prck I've ever seen. Can't stand him.

Steve Vai: He's like a machine. I'll give him credit where credit is due, I guess I'd have to for Malmsteen too, but he just isn't for me. Honorable mention to Joe Satriani on this one because when I think of one I automatically think of the other.

Jimi Hendrix: There, I said it, I'm not a Hendrix fan. I much prefer SRV's renditions of his tunes. I guess I just don't get it with Hendrix, like a lot of young people today are with EVH. I like a lot of his tunes, but I just can't listen to him. I will say this though, it could all be the quality of the recordings because I think they all sound like s.... Had Jimi been around today I may get into him. He's on the edge for me.

Santana: Another one I just don't get. His style of music does not appeal to me at all.....other than Black Magic Woman.
