I like the simplicity of just the three way, but I can see why some might like the 5 way.
A few years back I had a Black Strat that I had the three pickups and a 5 way, and at some point I thought I’d experiment with two singles like this in the bridge position, with a toggle switch pre 5-way. I found that I liked the options for the 5th gear setting on the 5 way, but didn’t find any discernable difference in 4th gear between the neck and the bridge variants.
In 5th gear alone, I had a three way mini switch to switch the coils from the bridge position as Left/Center/Right as I look down to the guitar. I mostly liked it with both coils on, which essentially what the RR wiring above is doing. It’s ideally a hum cancelling thicker single coil voicing with some of its own character.
Because of this, I rarely have a guitar with a center pickup as I get all that I want out of just two.
