Let me see if this works. It's a photo essay of my latest from-scratch build, which for reasons unknown even to me wants to be called Lacerda.

I am using Lauan, aka Philippine Mahogany, which is plentiful and very inexpensive in Hong Kong. It's not the prettiest wood in the current build, but a solid finish is going to be used.

I'm building the neck for it. It will be a reverse headstock, but not pointy.

The build is kind of a 'use up all this spare stuff' project. I had all of the parts already, so I wanted to try and make some space (and dust).

I've been unable to find a jointer of any decent size here, so my ability to make up blanks is really limited, and I end up with bodies that have really uneven seams. Sanding helps, but I have to find, uh, alternative finishes to help overcome this limitation.

Which is a teaser for the next set of photos...

It's absolutely fascinating to watch the progress through these photos. Superb work!  I find myself firmly entrenched in a "clue-free zone" when it comes to things like routing and shaping a body, but it would sure be fun to learn.  Keep it up, it's turning out great!

Cool shape you made there. I can see that finish being an irritant to your fore arm resting and rubbing on it.

Cool project!  Are you going to smooth/sand out the finish?  The current finish seems like it will be very abrasive when playing...  :icon_scratch:

Interesting design, but I'm not a fan of the finish. It's going to be abrasive and uncomfortable, as well as a kukka magnet. Certainly unique, though. I daresay it'll be one of a kind.

I was with you right up until the stucco...

I'm definitely scratching my head here . . . I have to agree with EJ . . . I hope you have some Deus Ex Machina that will blow us away.  :dontknow:

The finish dries a lot less... protuberant (???) than when it is first applied. It becomes much more benign. You can kind of see it in the primer shots. It definitely has a texture, but is not abrasive at all.

Not sure how impressed you'll all (you all'll?) be with the final finish. I can guarantee that there will be few if any fence-sitters.

It's a fascinating build, no doubt. I'm really interested to see how it all turns out.

('All y'all' would be the proper conjugation of 'y'all', btw...  :) )

When your wood is too ugly or uneven for traditional finishes...
