Just curious: How many active/formerly active folks in our U.S. Military.

I was a Munitions Systems Specialist Combat Support Unit crew chief (E-4) in USAF '93-'97. Stationed at Nellis AFB, NV as part of the 57th Fighter Weapons Wing; Went to the Gulf with the last F-4 rotation for the Kuwait liberation... got outa there just before some crazies toasted Khobar Towers Oklahoma-City-style!

To all my Ammo brothers (and sisters) out there, "IYAAYAS!"  :headbang1:

I was an enlisted soldier in the Army, served from 1985-1989 trained as a 98G - Signal Intelligence Collections operator  /Russian linguist (in reality, I was a live training aid to the HUMINT enlisted courses and Military Intelligence Officers' basic courses at Fort  Huachuca, AZ).  Grateful that I saw no action and basically served in a 9-to-5 duty billet, but regretful that I was never able to perform the mission many of my classmates got to perform in the field stations at Berlin, Augsburg, Sinop, and Misawa.  I made E-5 (Sergeant) two weeks before my enlistment ran out.  Call me Sarge!

I've been in the Navy Reserve (or Slacker Navy as I call it), since 2009.  I'm an E-4 Logistics Specialist (fancy title for supply guy), for the Corpsmen.  I drill at the Rock Island Arsenal, Illinois.  I've been told that the Rock Island Arsenal is the biggest manufacturer of ammunition for the U.S. Military.  So I remember in the 80's being told that if there were a nuclear war, my hometown was going to be toast in a hurry.  That seems better than living in a post apocalyptic hellhole.

US Army, Infantry, 1975-80, 1-26th INF, 3rd Bde, 1st Infantry Division, spent the whole time based in Goeppingen, Germany <edit> SGT. (E-5) </edit>

US Air Force. '69-'74.
Texas, Michigan, California, Viet Nam, Thialand, Korea.

Best two years of my live!  :occasion14:

Hey! My son is a fuzzy (E-1), newly assigned to 1st Infantry Division! He's a M1 Abram crewman out at Fort Riley, KS. He sure wanted to go to Germany, but I guess the Army doesn't have M1-equipped Armored Battalions in Europe anymore. -I know it doesn't count cuz he's not a forum member, but I'm proud as hell of him anyway, so I thought I'd give 'im honorable mention.

He has influenced a few of my builds (and may eventually end up with a couple if he asks me really nice-like), so maybe he counts after all!  :laughing7:

If we're doing honorable mentions I'll nominate my #1 hero, my Dad. He flew C-130s out of Moffett Field in and out of Vietnam during the height of the war. He's got some crazy stories about that period in our history.

Either way, I've never served, but have great respect for all of you that have. Let me extend a huge Thank You from me and my family for serving!

What about you, TFS? -You got a history with Uncle Sam?

Unfortunately, I do not. Went to work right out of High School, some junior college as part of my Union Carpentry Apprenticeship, then after I broke my back in '89, I had some JC for voc rehab.

My paternal grandfather was in the US Army for about a couple of weeks during WWII.  He went in as a contracted welder, had his one and only airflight of his lifetime going to Guam.  The plane landed, the war was over, he flew home with less than 24 hours on the ground.

My dad was in the US Army for 17 days, someone was prankin around in the showers, snapped him with a towel, he slipped and messed his back up real bad.  He was medically discharged.  It was the wierdest thing to read the timeline on his discharge paperworkd.

Even though they had such brief and inactive stints, The U.S. Army still sent a flag to honor them.  I gave my grandfather's flag to my aunt (dad's sis, at his funeral), and I have Dad's in a display case that I bought for it, will have it on display in our home that we're in process of buying.  Hope to be in by Nov 20.  I inherited my dad's house in Ca, considered relocating back to live in it since it was paid for, but in turn, sold it and am using the equity as my down payment.

I salute all of you, thanks again for serving gentlemen!

That is a very strange case of friendly-fire indeed!

Willingness and availability are a whole lot more than most people have to offer! -I'd say that your family has a very respectable legacy of service! Thanks for asking and starting the thread!

U.S. Air Force from March 1985 to December 2014.  Had my retirement ceremony on 26 September and now I'm on terminal leave looking for a job!

It was an interesting 29 year and 9 months.

Army in the 90s, one 4-year enlistment, E5.

There are sale coming up for vets or something? I really haven't ever taken much advantage of veteran discounts apart from using VA for a home loan. Always seemed like it would be weird to go get a free lunch at some Applebee's next to old guys who did stuff WW2, Korea, Vietnam or more recently in the MidEast.

Like in Half-Baked when Dave Chappelle goes to an NA meeting for smoking weed, and they boo him because it's not a real drug. I don't wanna get booed for a burger and mozzarella sticks, not worth it.

USN, 3 June 1987 - 10 August 1996.  Avionics (F/A-18 & Radar) Mostly in Jacksonville, Florida, plus 2 Sixth Fleet deployments.  Desert Storm/Desert Shield Veteran.

I was in the Air Force Reserves from 6/1998 to 8/2008.  Rank:  Major.  Billet:  General Surgeon (45S3).  I was up for Lt. Col., but didn't want to put in another two years to keep the rank, if promoted.  I also had no time to do Air Command and Staff College, even remotely.  I came incredibly close to going to Iraq in 2003.  Orders were cut in my name for a forward theater mobile surgical team.  Everyone who had orders in their name went, except me.  There had been such a shortage of slots for OTS that I had not yet been.  They couldn't deploy me if I hadn't already completed OTS.  I wasn't going to complain.    :glasses9:

My maternal grandfather was a Sergeant (E5) in the Marines.  He fought in the Viet Nam War and came home with a Purple Heart.
