John Cleese - Football vs Soccer

pretty funny, i'm all for misinformation as long as it's in the name of comedy :laughing7:

but i do hate that the english can't admit that "soccer" was an english word long before we americans started calling it soccer over here. we didn't start it!

american football is just our version of a war game. because we're a war-like people, but we don't want to see the actual blood and guts.

I grew up outside of Green Bay, Wisconsin. I can't imagine him on the side of a soccer field...

You are brave Fernando!

I thought we all agreed to be diplomatic in the name of global communications and agreed to disagree on a number of issues and leave them be!

If anyone wants a history about the use of the name 'soccer' to describe Association Football, please PM me..... I have been through this argument/discussion/debate numerous times. Basically the word 'soccer' is thought to be a retort to taunting of Association Football people calling Rugby players : 'Ruggers', in the UK. The rugby people took the s.o.c. out of the association and started taunting the Association Football people about 'soccer'. Believed to be a derogatory term, initially and still to many purists..
