J-bass shaped guitar body.

A Jazz bass doesn't look like a Jazz bass without a control plate and a pickguard to complete the look.

Jaco's was pickguardless.  Marcus Miller's is not the traditional layout.  Two bassists most identified with the J-Bass don't fit that mold.  Tfarny's has neither a pickguard or control plate (and is a Dinky body).  They are all unmistakeable as J-Basses IMO.  While I like the look of the pickguard and control plate too, I'll agree to disagree about the look.  W doesn't even offer a pickguard for their 5 string J-Bass and it's rear route only.

If you guys really like this, I might go back and see what I can do with the pickguard and the control plate. With the tele bridge on there, I'm not sure if I'm liking how the pickguard is so thin on the bottom right.

Which headstock to go with it?  Porn star Strat might be decent...but then again Tele might even work.

I definitely wouldn't mind seeing some Max photochops of this.

If I mention the Fender Jazz bass, do either of those basses immediately come to mind? (Well, I always associate the BOD when I think of a Jazz bass, but I'm the exception, not the rule.)

There are plenty of different equally valid Jazz bass designs, but the vibe I got from this idea for a guitar was to create a guitar in the style of the iconic Fender Jazz bass, which to most people is recognized as the standard 1960s design.

I get the feeling that even with the body shape nailed, the guitar would get pretty generic looking without the unique shape of the control plate and pickguard lending it the visual detail of being based upon a bass design.

I was wondering what warmoth would call it if they made it one of the body shape options. Jazz bass shaped guitar? J-bass shaped guitar?  Jazz guitar? J-guitar? J-tar?

No, but if you mention those artists, the J-Bass comes to mind.  It's like McCartney.  This is from a bass forum, if most people think of McCartney, they think of a Ric.  If most people think of a Hofner, they think of McCartney.  So, while Jaco or Miller might conjure up a J-Bass, a J-Bass doesn't necessarily conjure up Jaco or Miller.  Oh well, semantics.  I like the pickguard and plate on the bass, but it has to be resized to work on the guitar version.

I think it would be better to re-size the Jazz bass headstock.

How different would that be from a Strat or CBS though?

^ I'm thinking it won't be too different, if at all...not sure though, I guess there could be some suble variation on the headstock proportions.

It seems to me that we can each use whatever neck/headstock we want and that the "new" thang is the body shape.

For my tastes, I say that the Fender CBS headstock balances the look the best. I would love to get an Angled CBS headstock. Sorta like the Washburn Face Erasers, and the Nuno model.

Yep. There won't be an issue with Fender headstocks being on it, if they keep the scale and neck position the same.

How can we add a poll or voting or something to keep track of those of us who are interested in this body design?
