J Bass Pickup Debate

Hey everybody,

I just picked up a nice J Bass from the in-stock showroom yesterday, and I started some preliminary research on all the parts that I'm going to put into this beauty once she finally gets here in a few more months.

I'm having it routed with traditional J Bass pups, and I'm debating between the Lindy Fralin J Bass set for $180 (http://www.fralinpickups.com/bass.asp)

or the Fender Custom Shop '60s J Bass Pickup Set for $140 (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/accessories/fender-custom-shop-60s-j-bass-pickup-set).

Does anyone have a strong opinion one way or the other? I appreciate any feedback you can give me! Thanks!

Oh, and it's going to be a fretless, if that sways your feelings at all.

I am contemplating putting one of the fender '60s sets in my kit bass i built last year if i decide to go ahead and gut it all apart from the body and neck and make it a real player, then substitute the neck for a warmoth about 2 months after that haha, So i might be able to give some idea on them soon enough possibly.

Ill agree with jack the Rio Grandes are nice, i have the powerbucker in my five string warmoth, love the sounds i get from it by itself in series and parrallel, Matched up with a quarter pounder jazz neck which i also love the sound of.

No idea about the lindy fralins however.

Out of those two, I'd go with the Fralins, I guess they're supposed to sound more like vintage Fender than Fender's vintage set  :icon_scratch:

I really like the Kent Armstrongs lipsticks I just put in my own fretless jazz, the only thing I'd hesitate to recommend them for is that they mount kind of weird; they've got Danelectro-style spurs that are cast brass and are difficult to get quite right. They do sound great though, like a slightly hot 60's jazz.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the input.  :icon_thumright:
