Is this even remotely possible?

Question: is what I have mocked up below even remotely possible? (perhaps if a botique pup maker built the pups specifically to all fit like this?)

I kind of doubt it. 3 humbuckers barely fit on a 25.5" 22 fret guitar.

Steve Morse did it ;)

It is possible but the bobbins for the single coils would need to be modified and the bridge pickup needs to be pushed back a little for it to fit in between the middle and bridge. The real issue is what each pickup will do to it's neighbor magnetically. I think it would really change the flavor of each pickup a little, more so for the singles than the humbuckers.

As I was writing this I was thinking of Steve's setup, then your post popped up. It worked for him. I hear that guitar is a wiring nightmare.

I have steve's signature model.

I don't think there will be a magnetic issue - as far as I've noticed, it works fine together. And if there was an issue, I don't think steve would've went with this setup through his entire career  :guitaristgif:

I've always wanted one of those guitars. How do you like it?

There is just a little more space on his siggy than the proposed setup. Magnetic coupling is always something to consider when setting up pickups. It helps to watch the poles and place them accordingly.

I like it alot! It sounds awesome for low-gain stuff and slightly distorted sounds, but it has a rather low output level. This, because morse uses his pick to mark and define strokes in his playing. I think that's easier to do with the low output pickups than with a high output pickup.

Dangerous, I think you should do that project. It would be an interesting setup and even more interesting depending on the pickups used, i.e. tapped or stacked.

That bass is nuts. The string pull from all of those pickups must be enormous. Not that it doesn't work but.. wow! What "doesn't" it have.  :tard:

@Norwegian Guy, Steve is a great player. I think your right, those are lower output pickups. There is something to be said for a lower output pickup. Gives a great palette to work from.

...I'm thinking about another guitar I saw with a ton of pickups in it. I remember in the mid 80's Steve Vai had a Performance guitar I think, and it had a bunch in there. It was in a Guitar Player magazine. It may have been a Valley Arts but I'm pretty sure it was a Performance.

I also think that it's the low output 'pups that's the sollution to these kind of projects. They wouldn't have the same magnetic field as the high output ones.
Anyways, this is a cool project, and there's a reason for that uneiversal route :sign13:

I hope not, if yes I'll have to make this insanity ends with White Phosphorous Bombs....
