Can a person paint a guitar body with Rustoleum solid color spray paint and expect a good paint job? I was wanting too also put coats of clear lacquer on top of the paint.

I have done it but didnt go for super glass but rather a satin finish. I used about 1 can of primer sanding between coats. Then I did the color in 3 coats sanding between each.

I had tried some tests putting some Minwax lacquer over it on some test pieces and it seemed to adhere but I havent had the time to actually do a complete finish using the minwax lacquer top coat.

It's possible, there's some Youtube videos about doing it, but I'd strongly recommend seeking out Duplicolor auto body paint from a local auto parts store; it's just a better product imo

I ain't sure that's true. Duplicolor is ok it's made by Krylon, but the EPA has made them re do the formulas. Whichever you decide on stick with that brand all the way through IMO.

You can, but there’s no reason to when Roth Metal Flake, and Kustom Canz exist. Also Oxford and Stew Mac nitro.

The cost is a bit more but the product is far better. It’s 2/3 stage so you’ll need a top clearcoat.

I’ve used the exact same stuff. If you know what you are doing you can obviously get good results. But the better paint cans make it easier.

What clear did you use?

I know it was rustoleum, but unfortunately can't recall exact right now. I will try and recall. It may have been called "Sparkley Sparkelson Clear"

lol. I used triple thick glaze then level sanded. It shrank back so it no longer has that glass like finish. I’ve used real 2K since then and it retains the level sand really well.

Ya the triple thick is weird. I will look in basement later see if anything remains. I may have used their clear enamel and then wipe on poly too?

I don't remember the exact finishing schedule I used as this was summer of 2021 and before I really documented my work. It's possible that I threw on some wipe-on poly on top, but don't quote me on that. Some of the build progress photos before the outside glamor shots have some witness lines that indicate that I did to a by-hand top coat, and I think some of that is visible in the distortions of the reflection around the bridge.
