Ipe?

I've been checking out the new "select" fretboard woods and I've never came across Ipe before.  Looks really different and cool. Anyone know what it sounds like?  Can  you leave it unfinished?

p.s. the select top's and fretboard's are a really great touch.

As far as I know it's a Brazillian wood... very very hard... but don't know tonewisely... for the hardness I would say "bright", but better keep it with Warmoth guys :laughing7:

There's a lot about it here:  http://www.ipe-wood.com/index.html Any wood that has a 25 year lifespan in the Texas sun must be pretty tough stuff. It apparently starts brown and turns silver as it weathers.

Doing a quick check, it appears as if it's specific density is pretty close to maple.

If it's like maple could I use tru-oil on it?  I'm really looking for a Brazilian Rosewood type of tone on my next project though.

I wouldn't put a finish on an ipe fretboard, don't think that would be required or necessary
