I've got a standard set of chrome pickup covers and a pair of kmise invader style pickups. I've taken the screws off one pickup (which took a lot of wax off the pickup) and put the pickup cover on and screwed the top row of pole pieces on, to make sure they fit, I plan on getting 12 set screws to fill in the bottom row for each pickup from the hardware store, but i'm wondering, should I rub some wax along the screws to get the wax back on the screws? or should I learn to pot pickups and just do that instead?

The purpose of potting is to prevent the pickup from going microphonic. Whether or not you need repotting depends on whether or not you have compromised the function of the existing potting. In general, wax on screws is completely useless, and is merely a byproduct of the potting process. The important part is the wax on and inside of the windings.

I wouldn't worry about the wax from the pole pieces, but if you are adding a cover then re-potting the whole pickup will help prevent the cover itself from creating feedback.

that's good to know, I'm relieved that removing wax from the screws doesn't ruin the function, but i just saw a couple videos on potting and it looks super easy so i'm going to do that, they're high output and from what I've seen, potting a pickup doesn't completely remove feedback entirely, it just gets rid of the microphonic quality.
