Interesting (noob) finishing idea

IMHO I don't see it working, but if it does, I'll hail you as the king of innovators.. and be sure to take pics!

It's just going to evaporate and take some of your brain cells with it.  Keep your gas in your car amigo.

I think the guitar would smell like shit from 100 yards away for tne entire life of the guitar. . . not to mention your arm and stomach if you played the thing . .

I already mentioned that the gasoline was mentioned for reference! I would appreciate alternative substances though  :icon_biggrin: .

Take it easy all, and  :rock-on:

Let slugs crawl all over the guitar  - then clear coat the slime trails. :laughing7:

Why not get a flake coloration?

I know it wouldn't be 'natural', but my silver flake Jazzmaster looks very tame until the light hits it.

No offense, but I hate flake, and I also hate solid colored guitars. I prefer the look of natural looking bodies. Thanks for the suggestion.

Your gasoline guitar definitely needs some cigarette burns on the headstock. :laughing7:

Come to think of it, this is a great way to get someone you love to stop smoking...
Tell them that your guitar will burst into flames if they light up.

What's funny, is that everyone I know (I just graduated from a private high school last year, and 8 out of 10 kids smoked cigarettes there, it was sad) from school has been quitting in the last couple months. I know at least 20 people who have quit since November.

Really great!

Alsa Paint has something called "PrizmaCoat" which may be what you're looking for. I was thinking about using it, but then I decided a custom paint job was just too much work; I've never used it myself.

That rainbow effect is due to phase distortion from two reflective surfaces.  The surface of the liquid is semi reflective and the ground underneath it also becomes semi reflective due to it being coated by the liquid.  Essentially a prism effect.   Youd need a clear mirror finish over a different mirror finish.   I don't know if its possible, but I'm not a finishing expert either.

This seems to have a dark base, but it's close.  :dontknow:

Interesting. How do you know about the dark base? Maybe the manikin was already black... if so, this would work wouldn't it? The effect was a lot more noticeable than I would like, I wonder if something can be done about it. Thanks for that!

:rock-on:

Blue nailed the answer first.  You need two reflective surfaces one below the other and the top cannot be 100 percent reflective.  The light waves go out of phase and we perceive a rainbow.  The other easy way to do it, not easy for a guitar finish, is to put a diffraction grating on the surface and cover it with a protective layer.  Other than bicycle stickers from the late 70's, I dunno how you are going to pull off the finish.

Someone at a hobby shop might know how to get a pearlescent finish... that would probably look good.  I think it's gonna be translucent though, not clear.

Honestly, I think that this kind of finish is going to look REALLY gay.
You don't even need the gay pride sticker, because the finish has you covered.

(In the interest of being politically correct, i am not saying whether gay is good or bad, just that its definitely gay)

Yeah, I think so too. I was looking for something more subtle  :laughing11: . I don't know. It was just an idea, maybe someone will get inspired. Anyway  :rock-on: everybody.

That would certainly look better than the hideous Gibson in another thread. :laughing7:
