EEEEEEK!! First case of this I've heard of in 30 years of playing. I've heard people joke about using 'trained termites' for difficult internal passages, but I don't think these were the domesticated variety.
Luthier chunks your guitar in haste, says he may have to fumigate. Don't Worry. Be happy.
Yeah, but updown got the Carpenter Beegees to do his excavating, and he was left with nice big drill bit sized holes and plenty of structural wood between. The Termites on the other hand, are binge eating that poor guitar, leaving nothing behind.
About 10 years ago I bought a couple I bought a couple moving dollies from Home Depot. Got 'em home and noticed bunch of pinholes in the wood. I stuck them in the garage and didn't move them for a while to see what would happen. After a couple days, a bunch of new pinholes, with little sawdust mounds around them.
Took them back to Home Depot and told them what was up. They looked at me like I was crazy, but gave me my money back.
Next visit to HD a couple weeks later and I saw my returned dollies back on the shelf for sale.
A few years back photography nuts learned of a fungus that ate the coatings on some lenses and left behind an acid byproduct that etched the glass. Not only did it ruin lenses, things biological have a way of spreading! That was my first thought was - GET IT OUT OF MY SHOP!!!!!
Reminds me of John Hall (Rickenbacker) talking about his dad distributing fender guitars in the early years.
Fast-forward to 2:07 if you want to cut to the chase..
I've seen bugs in amps, but not guitars. Almost bought one some time back - Craig's List ad - but upon seeing the place it was in, passed. It was so infested with vermin I was afraid of what I'd bring home.
