Impressed With a Squier

With my main (and currently only) guitar in the shop for a few weeks for a fret level and electronics work, I decided to take a walk around Guitar Center and look for a cheap backup. Enter this Surf Green Squier Bullet Tele. $150 bucks and it plays better than half the guitars on the wall! Pickups are alright, nothing great, and the tuners are kind of crappy, but it sounds decent enough and plays great. So I took her home!

In the coming months I'll give it a new pickguard and pickups, and a Warmoth roasted maple neck when I can afford it. Anyways, happy NGD to me!

I ended up with a used Squier VM Jazzmaster I saw on CL in a similar fashion. Later it got AVRI pickguard & plastic, Pork Roll Waverly Pickup set, and a Screamin' Deals W neck with a satin nitro finish.

Fun to jam a cheapy! Enjoy!

Fender has been doing great with their Squiers in recent years. They're also really fun to mod!

I had a Squire for several months and quite liked it, sounded good. The Classic Vibe line of Squire seems to be good value for money and is one of the success stories of guitars that do not cost $7000. Even if you end up upgrading the jack and selector switch I think a good Squire is a good investment.

I'm always amazed at how light my squire is. With active electronics, it doesn't matter what wood they use, and with upgraded hardware, the playability is improved. I had graphite saddle savers on my bridge, smooth as nice!

Then a new body?

Then I'd have two new guitars! Don't encourage me haha

I modded a cheap Squier and ended up with a really fine instrument. Plays great and sounds good. Of course, new pickups and a Warmoth neck did help get it there. Nice move.

One of the best feeling basses I've ever played was a Squier. It was a James Johnston Jazz Bass. It sat in my local music store for weeks and I played it every time I went in. I decided to buy it and got the money in hand, but someone else had bought it.

Gonna put a new pickguard on with Roadhouse Pickups ruckus set (tele bridge, mini Kingston neck)

What color do you guys vote for? I know I don't want white. Thinking parchment (the safe route), maybe mint, or maybe the new yellow tortoise, which I like the sound of but it might be too funky with the surf green.

I'd really like to try them on in person, but I don't want three extra pickguards  :laughing11:

I would think the mint 'guard would look good on there. Even better if you could get one sandwiched with black in the middle, but I don't think I've ever seen that.

I agree that mint would be the best choice. The only other color I'd consider would be black, black pearl or black/white pattern, like paisley or something.

Mint is sounding good! Do either of you have a Warmoth mint guard? On the site it looks really green, but I've read that it's not really a green as it looks or I can leave it out in the sun to lessen the green.

I put together a Jaguar a few years back that had a mint 'guard on it, and if you just glanced at it, you wouldn't even pick up on the fact that it was green(ish). Very washed-out pastel shade. Had a Tele here from somebody else that was the same way.

Awesome, that's the kind of what I was hoping for.

Got my mint green guard and upgraded electronics! Roadhouse Pickups ruckus set, CRL switch, Bourns 95 pots, and Switchcraft output jack. Really liking the Kingston neck pickup, nice middle ground between a P-90 and Fender single coil and it balances well with the tele bridge.
