I'm thinking of a new rig.

I've been thinking of getting a rack, but I'm not sure yet.

This is what I've been thinking of.
Marshall 9200
Marshall JFX-1 Multi-FX
Marshall JMP-1 Midi Preamp

I allready have a Diezel Herbert, that sounds awesome, and I'm not going to sell it. But I want more variety in my sound, and the diezel does pretty well for some gigs, but I want a more versatile sound.
Suggestions?

Get an tubescreamer clone and a DS1. Mod the DS1 to the "vintage" specs on this page:

If you need more variety you're either Eric Johnson or... I don't know... Norwegian? I've got that setup with a two channel amp and my band covers anything from completely clean stuff, through alt and into some heavier stuff. With a killer amp like a Diesel I doubt you really need that much more. But maybe you do, or maybe you just have GAS.  :rock-on:

I get variety in my tone by running a pretty clean vintage-circuit t00b amp and sticking a variety of OD/Dist pedals in front for balls.

Currently, I can go from chimey clean to hair-metal distortion and everything in-between.

So, i'f you're not gonna be using the Herbert, I think you should just package it up and send it my way, i'll look after it for you.  :icon_jokercolor:

You could get something like a Hughes and Kettner Triamp or a Rivera Knucklehead, or a Diezel VH4 since you're already used to the diezel sound.  Anything with lots of channels/preamps should get you your diversity.

I used to think this way too back in the day, until I realized after playing multi-channel amps that the fancier the circuit, the weaker the tone.

General tone rule of thumb:

- The more crap your signal has to go through, the more adulterated the tone.

- The less crap your signal has to go through, the purer the tone.

But of course:  tone is subjective (everybody likes what they like).  But for those who want to avoid getting buzzy distortion, fizzy hi-end, too much compression,  a lack of dynamics, no "roar", etc... assuming you're using quality amplification, keeping things simple will be the ticket.

:hello2: :hello2: Truer words have never been uttered in the universe!!!  :hello2: :hello2:

I used to have a HUGE rack full of gear. I thought my tone was good. I was wrong. Soooo wrong!!!!!

I did an experiment where I took out each piece of rack gear until it was just the preamp & the power amp. Suddenly my tone got 10x better. All the other gear was going through the effects loop & was supposed to not alter my tone. Wrong again.

I finally clued in & sold every piece of rack gear I owned. I'm down to a Mesa Lonestar & an extra Roadster 2x12 cab & my tone has gotten infinitely better. I just use an Xotic BB pedal to boost & that's all she wrote.

Hmmm, you have a Diezel Herbert, and you are looking for something else.  That's cool, what style are you looking for?  I generally appreciate everyone's input on posts like this, but tone/rig set up is an opinion.  Good tone is how close the actual sound produced is to your opinion.  But if you don't give a couple of more clues to what you are looking for, then it can quickly turn into a contest of who can piss further into the wind.  Very competitive, unguided, wholly unprovable, and generally worthless treatises on personal rig favorites.  Then again, that is my opinion, so take it with a grain of salt.
