I'm a little afraid to go with rosewood...what else is there?

hey - don't forget that the font your order receipt is printed with has at least a 3% impact

That's only if you're using plastic humbucker mouting rings.

I'm building a mahogany Jazzmaster with 3 P-90's.

I want an unfinished neck, but I'm thinking that rosewood might make the guitar too muddy. Though frankly, I haven't played enough different guitars to really have an opinion on what is too muddy (I play left-handed, so getting out there and playing more guitars isn't too much of an option). But based on what I've read, I think I might be better off getting something brighter.

What other neck woods might be a good choice? I'm hoping to keep the neck around 300 before options, so nothing too crazy.

If your P-90's aren't too hot (overwound), you should be fine - Tfarny had a guitar real close to your proposed setup, and he
used a bright pickup (SD Jazz bucker) which balanced out his dark guitar.  P-90's are basically just fatter single coils.

OTOH, why go with unfinished?  Some do it just to save money, but if you can don't short-change yourself - get what you really want (if this is the case here).

As an example, I just got a 1/4 sawn all maple neck - finished - for $350.00 for my lefty partsOcaster.  It ain't that much more for finished.

(Oh, and greets from the Secret Sinister (left-handed) Cabal.  *secret handshake*  :icon_biggrin:  )

No, it sure isn't. Honestly, I'm excited to try an unfinished neck. Being a lefty, it sure is tough to find unique stuff like that.

As for the welcome to the club, thanks! I would just ask you to never read my post above this one (at least not until the auction ends...I desperately need a functional guitar.  :glasses10: )

I may have missed something, but what about a wenge neck?  I have two builds with black korina bodies and wenge necks, and both have killer tone.  Black korina is pretty similar to mahogany, as I recall.  If the need arose, I'd put a wenge neck on a mahogany body, no problemo.  :icon_thumright:

I totally agree.  I have a korina body mated with a wenge/ebony neck and totally love it.
Fantastic resonance, and warmer that I expected.  Hard to say if the "warmpth" is coming from the korina or wenge though.
The PRS just keeps getting dustier and dustier...
;-)

Hey DocNRock and Watershed, I see that you both use black korina body with wenge neck, what fingerboard do you use?

I want to build an LP and have been recommended to use those woods, everybody seems to agree that the mids are insane but I really want to get those punchy lows that a gibson LP has.
I compared already 2 PRS, one made from korina and one made from mahogany with maple top and the korina had a really good sustain compared to mahogany and the highs were better but it lacked some of those low mids, upper bass that mahogany had.
I wonder if a wenge neck would bring that punchy bass back?
