I think I'm in LOVE!!!

SRV thinks his guitar stinks...

It probably did. Ever watch the way he'd sweat all over thing? Then, between that and the transmission tower guy wires he'd use for strings, it's a wonder he could get enough of a grip on the strings to bend them <grin>

I'm not a fan of that look on her face that says "yeah, I'm a better guitarist than you, but what's more important is that I'll get 600,000 youtube views just because I'm hot."

Of course, I'd let her jam with me any day... wait, did I say "jam"?

By the way, how does she get that howling smooth lead tone in the third video?  I've been trying to do that, but my experimentation has failed entirely... is it just in the fingers?

I'm just guessing, but it sounds like she's playing the neck pickup in single coil rather than humbucking mode. That, into a naturally overdriven amp, rather than some "magic stomp box" (fuzz, distortion, overdrive, etc.). The amp may be in saturation from nailing the preamp with the master down, or perhaps she's got an attentuator of some sort and the amp is running full-tilt boogie. Plus, she's clearly done a great deal of practicing so she's very smooth.

Hmm, I didn't think about the fact that she could be splitting her coils.  I'll try it with a single coil guitar into a saturated amp... I've tried it plenty of times with humbuckers, but it doesn't quite work out.  I can't remember the last time that I tried driving the amp hard with the neck position on a Strat, so that might be the magic combo...

In the 1st video, I can't take my eyes off of how....ergonomic....the upper horn of the guitar is.

It's funny you say that ... I have a female friend who plays a Parker Fly, and she loves it.  I tried it once, and found the shape of the upper horn dug into the bottom of my ribcage.  She has no problem playing it though.  Perhaps the Fly was designed for the female physique?

This "hot babe with average skills" thing is hitting a crescendo about now: Guitar Player mag has TWO of 'em in the new issue, Ali Handal and Ana Popovic. A lotta 15-year-old boys must be buying downloads with their starter credit cards. It's hard to see how GP is really doing "Women in Rock" a big favor so far, if these were boys, they'd still be in the garage. Thereby teaching girls that what really counts is the lips 'n' jiggle.... at least that Orianthi can flat out play. I keep waiting for that momo when a new guitarist comes out who doesn't feel compelled to play another fuckin' Hendrix cover, but indeed plays something better.
Yay.  :toothy10: :hello2:

I'm just barely too young to remember, but I'm pretty sure when Jimi Hendrix came out, they didn't call him "the new Chuck Berry", they called him Jimi Hendrix. Mick Jagger? "The new Pat Boone".... stagflation indeed. :sad1: Who told this girl she could sing?

I mean, this sucks, right? This other one can play, but how long can anyone survive on the same 70's stuff....

It sounds better if you turn the sound off. Maybe she can marry John Mayer and they can have cute little blue babies stuffed with cash. :blob7:

Exactly... nothing against these particular girls (I'm sure they're trying their hardest), but I'm not 15 anymore... if I want to look at girls flaunting their stuff, there are plenty of better options on the Internet.  It's nice to have some eye candy while I'm watching a guitar video on YouTube, but not nice enough to justify watching something that's not good enough on merit alone.

Ha, yeah, that's nothing new.  Ever heard of Title IX?
I can only speak for my own field, but you'd be surprised how much easier it is for an attractive woman to become a surgeon.  It's a boys' club, unless you're hot... if that's the case, then you don't even need to be qualified...

You're not 15 any more, but 15 year olds are a major part of a large demographic that is buying recordings, and the record labels want to drag as many dollars as possible out of those kid's pockets. How do you sell to kids? Depends on their age. For the very young, toys and sugar works. For 15 year olds? Sex and drugs and rock 'n' roll. And apparently, dirty hair <grin>

Sure, and I understand when record labels sign talentless people just because they have flash... and I'd even understand if some of them end up in Guitar Player just because they're famous... but I don't expect small-timers with no talent to end up in a magazine that's targeted towards musicians just because they appeal to teenagers.

Mark wins this thread.

On a side note, I wish I had more guitar face. I have next to no expression at all when I play, especially in front of people. You could call it "focus," but it's really more like "fear." I need to start, you know, moving around when I'm on stage too; I look like a freakin' cardboard cutout of myself up there. But I digress.

Oh yeah, almost forgot: that first girl is hot.  :icon_thumright:

I know what you mean. I used to get a ton of guff from the singer in the last band I was in, because I was the lead guitar player and I was supposed to be the second draw after him. "Dance, bounce, do something, goddammit!" he'd say. "People come to see us, not just listen!" Whatever. I was paying attention to what I was doing, as opposed to the bass player who was staring at tits while he humped his bass and couldn't remember what tune we were playing <grin>

Cagey, that was some pretty good win.

As for shredding Floyd and Beatles, that's unacceptable. When you write such great music to begin with, adding shred takes away from it. I think there is more to be said in subtlety than in flamboyancy. She plays great, but I'm more of a "Les is Moar" guy.

I thought you were a "Les is Paul" kind of guy.
