How did you know about Warmoth?

Since this topic was from 5 years ago, I had to scroll back to see if I'd already replied to it. I don't think I had created an account here yet at the time of this thread....

Yup, looking at my profile, I created this account 3 months after this thread. :)

I don't remember how I'd stumbled across WM, but I'd known about them long before I started posting here, even before I was really interested in putting guitars together myself rather than just buying one off the wall of the local music shop. It very well could've been an ad in some random guitar magazine from back in the day when magazines were actually still a thing! ;)

And before hearing Aaron pronounce "Warmoth," I -- like I would imagine many, many people -- pronounced it "War Moth," like Mothra's more aggressive gun-loving brother, the one you always regret inviting to Thanksgiving dinner but Mom always insists. 😂

I had moved into the woods, smack dab in the middle of 50 acres of trees, water from a cistern and solar panels with battery backup. Needless to say the internets was spotty and I tried for a year to get on the forum but the robot code wasn't letting me join, so my 1st experience was from playing with the guitar builder program , some of the old parts I miss, but the custom build software is what sucked me in, the quality of the very first neck got me as a repeater, the part about living off grid is pertinent because I had no company other than my wife, so nobody to play music with either. Building guitars has helped to fill the art void, I no longer live in the woods but I am still playing with the custom builder.

From ads in US Guitar magazines back in the 80s, although it was not until around 10 years ago that I looked for the website and ordered something.

This is my experience exactly as well.

I started playing guitar seriously in 1984 or so, at age 14. I'd go down to local magazine store and grab the latest Guitar Player, or other magazine for the transcriptions of songs / solos. In the back of the magazine would be ads for Warmoth. I remember them advertising the compound radius neck, and various options for a custom guitar. As a side note, the guitar magazine section in the store was right next to the porn magazine section. Oh.....there was more than one occasion where I'd grad a porn mag, put it inside the guitar mag and pretend I was reading the guitar mag.

Roughly 10 years ago, I finally bought a neck and body from Warmoth in my quest to fulfill a long time desire to put a guitar together. While I've built an additional 3 more, that 1st W, a Tele, is my # 2.

My dad repaired guitars and made a few in the late 70's. When I was into guitar playing in high school I wanted to build my own so of course I spent hours googling custom guitars and found Warmoth's site. I ordered my first part (a pickguard) in 2009 and have ordered a dozen or so times since then.

I was buying Guitar Player mag every month at the local music shop since the mid-70s (My first issue was Sept 75 with the Hendrix flexi-disc) and after a couple years I remember seeing little Boogie Bodies ads in the back, followed sometime later by the little Warmoth turtle ads. So probably it was early 80s when I first got wind of Warmoth. During the early 80s I had sent away for piles of catalogs by mail, (Carvin, Alembic, Boogie, Villette-Citron, Spector come to mind - probably had one from Warmoth too). I didn't end up ordering anything until about 2000 when I got a magnificent QUILTED MAPLE strat neck, fully lacquered and ready to mount. Never did end up playing it as it was sold off along with most everything else as I moved across the Atlantic that year...

I learned of them in the wild west days of the internet. I had just gotten a Squier strat, an ibanez soundtank chorus pedal, 2 cords, an ibanez tone blaster practice amp, and a rush songbook for 100 bucks from cousin.
Man, I was hooked! Being the nerd I am, I scoured this new and exciting source for any and all info on my new passion, guitars!
I came across warmoth and started drooling over the pre showcase offerings.
My arrogance told me I could build a better guitar than fender for less money! Big time lol. Somewhat true though.

Well, I saw this spalted maple top i just HAD to have. Only problem was it was affixed to a tele body, which I hated at the time (all strat all the time). "Well, I guess I'm building a tele....."

I've done 2 more as you can see and will most likely build a 4th.

So, did they live up to my hype and turn out better than fender? IMO, at least equal to american standards.
Spec, they're equal to FCS.
I built the tele in '99
The strat in '09
And the vip in '22.

The tele is amazing.
The strat needs a pickup swap, but is equally as good.

The VIP is by far my best guitar, and favorite. If you cherry pick every spec, it should be, right?

The only non warmoth guitars ill buy are things warmoth doesnt offer like an acoustic, a strandberg, and esp eclipses (i love the necks and want every one I pick up, lol)
