Looks like I will be in Houston TX from April 22-26th. I plan on looking up some blues to go see in the evening at least one night. Also going to eat as much BBQ as humanly possible. What else is good in Houston?

My Brother lives in Houston, he's a pilot for NASA, He fly's the WB-57.

He can give you a personal tour of Johnson space center.

That would be great! Maybe a tour from 20,000'?  Actually a bad idea for me as I would toss my cookies fairly quickly.
My days are going to be quite full so I need to focus on evening activities.

I've thought about flying into Dallas and driving down. Why? Why not. I enjoy looking at everything / nothing, listening to the local radio, making interesting stops.

I can't believe how low that plane sits.

Ken, I know he can't give you a ride, I've tried for years with no success.

But Tom (my brother) is just like the pilots in the movie "Top Gun" they love their own attention and love to talk to anyone who will listen to them about how great they are.

I'm actually over-exagerating but mostly serious. I can give him a heads up that your gonna be there, I guarantee youl have a good time if you meet him.

That's extremely generous. If I knew exactly what my schedule was I might try it. Maybe as the date gets closer it will become clearer.

I'm going there on someone else's dime. It will be important for me to do all of things they are paying me to do. I've never been to Texas other than to touch down and take off. I can't wait to sample the area.

I used to travel extensively for work, and it was sometimes frustrating to find yourself somewhere you'd like to spend some time and not be able to do it for precisely that reason. That, and even when you did have the time, to not have someone with you to share it with.

I'm in Austin! If you come through here, SXSW is building, there's already a ton of music going on. If you want to meet for lunch, I could introduce you to a few guys, musicians and enthusiastic fans. Great food too... you need to try kerby lane for breakfast, P. Terry's for lunch, the frisco for 2nd lunch, and the salt lick for dinner... :headbang1:

If you do drive down from Dallas, stop at Buc-ees in Madisonville, check out the prisons and Sam Houston statue in Huntsville.  You'll be surprised how big the outskirts of Houston is before even getting there.  Prepare to be disappointed by the city, IMO.  I grew up in the shadow of Houston.  It looks nice in your rearview.

Detroit's that way. Always glad to see it in the rearview mirror. The metropolitan area is huge, with about 4 million people and a robust economy. It's the city itself that's a war-torn nightmare from Hell that makes Bagdad look like an attractive vacation destination. I'm always reminded of that old move "Escape From New York", where they've turned Manhattan Island into a prison camp. That's sorta what Detroit is like, except they don't have any kind of barriers around it. Makes it even more frightening, since there's nothing holding the desperate and psychotic back.

The only think interesting in Houston to me was the Johnson Space Center. I had more fun in Galveston... :icon_biggrin:

As far as driving from Dallas to Houston, you're in for a long ride.  :laughing7:

Yeah, I've been suspecting as much. Austin is the place I would really like to go. Austin would be more like what I'm used to and like. Living in Portland, it has many parallels.
Hmmm, maybe I could fly into Austin instead. I did fly in and out of there once so that means there is an airport there, right?
On the way back the plan is to fly into Sacramento for a day to visit a friend, then maybe drive back to town. I've never been against driving too much. It's a great time to think about stuff and enjoy this great land. I drove here from Florida years ago and loved every minute of it. Even when I was out in the middle of nowhere. So interesting to think about how the pioneers did it with no roads and very little provision.

Well if you drove from Florida to Oregon, then the Dallas to Houston drive would be right up your alley. But yes Austin is the place for Blues, there's lots of clubs on 6th street Antones is a good place to start... :icon_thumright:

When I lived in Killeen we would always go to Austin. Those were good times. We would hang out at this place called the Black Cat Lounge. I'm not sure if it's there anymore but we saw some amazing blues there.

I'm from Austin, so perhaps I'm biased, but would recommend spending more time here and less in Houston.  I've nothing against Houston, but Austin is just a unique place and having self-labeled itself the "Live Music Capitol of the World", you can find alot of live music venues and some of them will even have good bands playing  :laughing7:  Seriously, there's a lot of good bands but also a lot of not so good bands and there's plenty of other things to do and see.  The drive to Houston is about 2 1/2 hours, so it's not too bad.  I would not want to drive from Dallas.

Note that the weekend of April 19th, the MotoGP is here.  If you can come in early and like racing, it should be a fun event.

I'd agree, "keep Austin weird"... :icon_thumright: And I can't wait until the 19-21 for MotoGP for first time in Texas...

if you go to Dallas 3 days early, bring a bunch of pickups and get a booth at the Dallas Guitar Show! :)
