Thanks for the kind words, Tony.  Funny thing, the neck on my tele is not bound - but it has no inlays so that may be what's got you thinking it's different-and-special.  I'm not crazy about bound necks, myself, but I encourage you to realize your vision.  I definitely like the black-binding-on-white ideas you're exploring.  Check out Updown's Stormtrooper for some beauty black-on-white implementation.

It's not likely that I can get another one with that sort of figuring for the price I paid (used).

I sold it to fund the Tele that I NEEDED for my country band that I also love dearly, so it's not so bad.  It wasn't getting played and it wasn't nearly so pretty when I had it, and you DID ruin it with gold hardware, so it's not so terrible really.  Thanks for making me feel better! ccasion14:

I've got two possible necks for this first build, one maple, and one rosewood. They're ready to go, sitting at home as we speak.

However, I mocked the guitar up with a 70's neck, both fingerboard types, and I'm starting to think they suit the guitar. Gives it an overall 70's vibe.



I've always loved the bullet adjuster, don't know why.

Thoughts?

I'll never understand the desire for "that '70s vibe" on Fender guitars. It was the worst period in their history. Design considerations, aesthetics and quality control were so bad the company was dying on the vine. It's what allowed the Japanese to take a large part of that market, same way they did the automotives during the same period. Somehow, a large number of American companies managed to allow a large number of clueless MBA grads and marketing weenies who apparently had no idea that there were customers on the other side of the business equation to get control, and it was devastating. To own or emulate a Fender guitar from that era is akin to saying "I know nothing about guitars".

That said, the only good thing out of the mind of Leo's 70's self was the bullet rod. Love those, convenient head adjust that isn't hideous.

I know all about that, although I've never actually played a guitar from the 70's to see for myself. But I know the era is regarded as the nadir for Fender.

But the one thing I don't agree about is the aesthetics. I just think the 70's headstock looks cool.

Besides, a modern neck in that style would be built to modern standards right? So none of the CBS era issues. I'm looking at the Fender Pawn Shop Strat neck in particular. 9.5" radius, 22 frets, four bolt neck etc. Given that I like the look, the historical issues over the quality of actual 70's guitars is going to be irrelevant, right?

That said, I'm not 100% either. It's an option.

And yeah, the 72 Tele Deluxe is an awesome guitar, very much on my wish list!

12" radius as well, which I love. The originals even had that radius at the time, which was pretty unusual for a Fender.

The good thing is that I already have both a maple and rosewood neck indoors, so I can try both.

That's a point. Nobody makes necks today as bad as they did back then so if you like that look, then maybe that's the way to roll.

I do, I really do! I mean, I like the '68 headstock anyway - that's pure Hendrix and Blackmore. But then for some reason that shiny silver bullet really puts the cherry on top for me. All 70's Strat necks have a 7.25", even the re-issues, which I can't get along with so well (I like to do lots of bends, I hate choking out, and I like a low action), but I always liked the look - and now they do these Pawn Shop necks in a radius I can get along with.

But I don't need to decide now. I've got the looong wait from now until my body arrives to think about it - and probably change my mind a hundred times!
