Additionally, maybe some sort of incentive for winning can be done.  The page banners are awesome but maybe we can partner with Warmoth, get a gift certificate for the winner.  Perhaps $25-50???  Seems like a minimal investment.  $25 a month is only $300 a year.

Uhhhh looks like I'm not the only one suggesting  a baffle Super Turbo. Lol

Them giving a gift cert and a "baffle" or "waffle" are 2 different things. Even with a meaningless contest where the reward has been peer recognition, it has been full of criticism and nitpicking, not to mention multiple fake accounts to double and triple vote, I can't imagine a financial reward making this for fun, light hearted competition better.  No good deed goes unpunished.

Re-read my post that is what I said is a gift certificate for the winner. Not a waffle.

I read that you weren't the only one thinking of a baffle with a quote about a gift certificate.    :sad1:  Guess I misread it.

No probem at all.

FWIW, I was (still am) for the waffle.  I participated in 2 of them. The winners were excellent sports and even did build threads.  But IIRC, PayPal suspended one of the accounts holding the waffle money.  Another waffle on here just ain't gonna happen on here.  We even speak in code so the "r" word won't show up in a search.

I even like the idea of the gift certificate for the GOM monthly winners, but IME my guess is that won't happen either.  They've had one sale in 30+ years, and with all the nitpicking when nothing's at stake, if they have to take 1 phone call that is a complaint about a contest they're hypothetically and reluctantly involved in....it won't continue.  But my gift is never guessing why something will work, only why it won't.

This sort of thing is exactly why the "unofficial" name is annoying. It's unofficial when it suits them (they don't need to read it or reply to anything), but we can't actually do whatever we want, like we could if it really was unofficial.

I say the heck with a contest. What I would like to see is just one area where anyone who wanted to participate could submit 4  pictures of their finished guitar. All in one spot so we would not have to click one each persons post. A collage of finished guitars 4 at a time. 1of the 4 pictures could have the name of the person who submitted it on cardstock in the pic so comments could be addressed to the correct person. I don't know how or if this is even possible for an administrator to do on one of the Forums Threads though. Just and idea. Or after the pics are submitted something like photobucket could hold them all for us to enjoy. Photobucket is very easy to use. And the members do not need an account to go on an look.

There's nothing stopping you (or anybody else) from starting a 'this month's completed builds photos thread', though it seems like you're just exchanging one set of rules for another! You could just leave it up to each poster to decide how many pics to put up - and where to host them.

I might give it a try. Stay tuned, but I think it will be a flop unless the Forum does it. I will give it a shot though. Thanks.

Just to be clear. I was the one that originated the original waffle. we did it 3 maybe 4 times I can't remember. Whether or not W had a problem with it they NEVER once said anything. It was in the open and usually had 2-3 threads running concurrent. It would usually raise about $2500 with all less $100 going to a single winner with a runner up getting $100. I never made a penny it all went to the two winners. I only bring this up because I think W really did stay out of this and let the forum members have fun. It was PayPal that had the issue. After the second time they sent me a e-mail saying the "waffles" were against policy unless you could provide a form that showed you were with a church or non profit able to legally run one. we did it a couple of more times and on the last one they sent me a e-mail saying they were going to freeze my account. I don't know why they gave me a heads up but they did. I immediately emptied the account and held the funds till the final drawing and the winner got his reward. In the after math they have suspended that account but will not let me close it. I tried to re-open another account but my checking account has been blacklisted. I have no desire to open a new checking account just to use their services so I haven't used PayPal since. If I hadn't taken the money out the day they sent me the e-mail telling me they were closing my account I don't know if I would have ever been able to get it out.

with all that said it was a really fun thing to do and goes along way to show how mature this board is in the way it handles itself. I don't know if it would have worked on a lot of other boards. enough of the high jack I just mostly wanted to say W had nothing to do with shutting it down and they looked the other way the entire time.

I agree with Super Turbo Deluxe Custom, thank you, Ken.  I didn't remember who originated the "waffles," but I remember at least one of the winners. It was Blue313, I think was his screen name; I believe his name was Dan. If I recall correctly, he built a super sweet LPS with the winnings.  I think we all had a lot of fun making suggestions to him for his build, but all knew that, in the end, it was his complete choice. Thanks for explaining why it got shut down. That is really unfortunate, because it was a lot of fun.

Oh well, your post makes it very clear that GOTM will not be going in that direction. What would be really cool would be if Warmoth themselves ponied up for a small to moderate gift certificate for the winners and runners-up. But they probably can't since this is "Unofficial Warmoth," and Warmoth technically does not sell parts to build your own guitar or bass, but rather, they sell "replacement" parts. What the buyer chooses to do with those parts is outside of Warmoth's control. But to provide a prize would be directly supporting/encouraging/rewarding those who choose to build their own instrument out of "replacement" parts, and might put their license with Fender at risk.

I would have thought that a prize for guitar of the year competition would work well. It can only be positive, as it would promote good build quality and practices which in turn would be good for Warmoth. I think $2500 dollars is too much though! There is a big difference between buying a bare neck (or maybe finished neck due to warranty constraints) and a bare body, to buying finished neck and body and assembling. I don't believe a guitar of the year example should be one of the latter examples.

The main issues with running this though are:

1) Confirming and validating what was a self finished example, and proving it was so before it is officially entered. This would need Warmoth to certify from the purchaser's records.

2) Holding and dealing with entry funds. Warmoth would not give a winner cash etc, it would have to be self funded by the entrants. Someone would need to manage that.

3) Having someone officially affiliated with Warmoth to administer the competition. This takes employee time, do they have it? I suspect not!

When it comes to it, ultimately it would seem that the GOTM, GOTY comps are just a bit of fun. I suspect that's the way it will stay unless Warmoth can get involved in some way. It would be nice to at the very least get a GOTM / GOTY certificate!

Meanwhile, let's just have some fun!

Giving away prizes of any sort, monetary or otherwise, is a major league pain in the ass. The amount of validation, paperwork, tax reporting, etc. is just nuts, which is why you rarely see it except by large companies who have full-blown marketing departments dedicated to that sort of thing. Warmoth barely even advertises at all, and clearly has enough on its plate just doing the amount of business they do. I mean, they basically run the joint out of a pole barn in the middle of nowhere...

Hello everyone. I just finished my first build. After nearly a year of planning, researching and collecting parts, and careful hand assembly, my new Strat is in hand. I joined this forum to be able to converse with other enthusiasts as I prepare for my next build, and hopefully show off my handiwork.

To sort of introduce myself, I got my first guitar for Christmas in 1963. That's six weeks before the Beatles hit the Ed Sullivan Show. (Yes, I'm old). I've been playing off and on for the last 50 years. I love my guitars almost as much as I love my sons. I'm no great musician, and these days I just play for my own enjoyment. Musical preferences range from the Beatles & Stones, to Floyd, Yes, & Genesis, to Sound Garden. '80s and '90s punk hold a special place in my heart. (Dag Nasty, Descendants, Angelic Upstarts, Ramones, Bad Religion, NOFX, just to name a few) And let's not forget early alternative and Ska. (Blink, Sum 41, Cake, Catch 22, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, et. al.)

As a brand new member, I don't think it's my place to make suggestions as to how to change what so many of you have worked so hard to achieve. I've read the thread, and my only suggestion is to keep prizes out of the picture. Looking at the photos, I can see the effort and love that went into every instrument. I think $ would just muddy up the works.

And if I might ask one question: My new axe has a Warmoth finished body, but because I prefer a satin lacquer finish on the neck, I did that myself. Which category would it fit into?

Welcome BigSteve22,  nice first post.

I also think monetary prices would just muddy the water. Anyway that aside an owner finished is for the whole instrument. If the body is Warmoth finished with an owner finished neck it would enter in the category of Warmoth finished. At least that's how I understood it and entered such an instrument.

Please post a thread with some pics of your newly built strat. We'd love to see them.
