GOTM variations

You wouldn't brag about your ex if you were at a party at your gf's family place.

I wouldn't brag about my ex anywhere but a dog fight.  But that's a different forum altogether.

LMAO. Very Nice! I have to wipe the coffee off my monitor now.

I like the idea of a runner's up contest. If such a thing happened, and teles were excluded, I might stand a chance; and finally get the green strat out of your faces every other month. You guys really love teles.

Actually, there is a "runners-up" contest once a year, at the end. Only second-place winners may enter, but there are no other restrictions.

i think the next category should be "Green Quilted Maple guitars with gold hardware".

No harm, per se. But, unofficial as it may be, it is Warmoth's forum. We exist at their pleasure on their servers at no cost to us. I'm not sure how much pleasure they would get from allowing examples of how well something can be done using their competitor's components.
But they do allow examples - there are constant non-Warmoth build threads popping up in general discussion. I have one in there right now!

Doesn't mean they like it. Just means they're reasonable. This forum sorta self-moderates, so they let us have our head more often than not as it rarely leads to misbehaviour.

I still think its tacky. Especially since the source is known, And its a direct competitor with apparently some bad blood w Warmoth. Scratch builds are different. Or Warmoth neck and body from somewhere else.

I'm sure there are plenty of other luthier forums where the proud owners of non-Warmoth guitars can post their builds.  Even here, the Work in Progress forum is not a completely inappropriate place to discuss builds that do not include Warmoth parts, though one would hope that someone posting such a thread would have a history of using Warmoth parts.

But in the unofficial Warmoth GOM competition?  No.  Especially if there is even a hint of a possibility that there might be some kind of Warmoth-provided prizes involved.

________

I used to think it would be a cool idea to have other flavors of GOM, like one month have a strictly Tele competition for example, and I liked having the occasional bass-only competition.  But as others have mentioned, such things are exclusionary by nature.  And if increased participation is the goal, then exclusion is not what you want.

One other observation:  I think participation would be increased if there was a greater perceived chance of winning by the non-regulars.  But to increase that perceived chance? I don't know.

I don't know. Sounds like a slippery slope.
"Slippery slope" without a demonstration of the inevitability of undesired consequences is a logical fallacy, my friend!  :occasion14:

It's unofficial as a legal disclaimer; not responsible for the opinions and content not reflecting blah, blah, blah.  However, they do link to the forum from the main site and pay for the webspace.  It's a marketing tool.  If the non-Warmoth content threads help a customer with their project, all the better.  It means they can be more efficient with making parts.  In a way, we are acting as "unofficial" Warmoth advisors.

In the past, the mods have expressed an implied etiquette to disclose any commercial affiliation.  Doug and Ken both provide services that may compliment your Warmoth project.  They do not directly compete with anything Warmoth provides and first and foremost are Warmoth customers and enthusiasts.  There have been a few members removed in the past for trolling their business here.

FWIW and only speaking as a newbie, I agree with most people. Diluting the guitar of the month with other "" of the month items will just over crowd and turn people off. Too complicated and time consuming. How about best neck plate of the month! :-)

Great thread for a great topic. I used to be a very active member of this forum back in '08 and '09.  The GOM was just getting going for a few months before I kind of stopped frequenting this forum.  I thought it was a great concept, and there were some spectacular instruments as winners and runners-up. Sometimes I was even surprised by the winner. But hey, I guess others have better taste than me.  :laughing7:  I don't remember if I ever entered any of mine, or not.

Seriously though, as someone who hasn't been around in a while and now is coming back around, I'll offer my $0.02, FWIW. I think the number of categories depends upon the average number of entrants.  Bass and guitar could fairly be in the same contest, but if there are enough new basses being cranked out, then it might make sense to have a separate BOTM.  As to whether there should be separate categories between amateur and professionally finished, again, I think it depends upon how many entrants there are.  An amateur finish might not turn out as slick as one done by a pro, but personally I might give my vote to the amateur if I thought they did an exceptional job.  So realistically, it could just be kept as one category, held monthly.

So, if it really is kept at just one category, perhaps there could be some sort of prize with substance.  Perhaps a $25 gift certificate from Warmoth, or something like that.

Regarding Facebook, I use Facebook, but didn't know there was a Warmoth page.  That could be a great place to advertise the GOTM contest, as long as the page owner is on-board with the idea. It might also help drive forum participation.  This always was a great forum. Most everyone was easy going, laid back, helpful, and in general, nice. Since I've been coming back around, the forum personality is the same, and the people are great, but it does feel like there are a lot fewer forum participants than there were back in '08 and '09.

Anyway, those are my thoughts. GOTM is a great thing. And FWIW, I think it should definitely be kept to Warmoth-only products.  It is their forum. I guess a "half-moth" would be ok, but I personally don't think other parts makers (Mighty Mite, USACG, Carvin, etc.) should be represented.  Really, this is advertisement for Warmoth. Let the other companies host their own forum and their own GOTM contest.  How far will a guitar or bass made with a Warmoth body or neck get in a competition on their forum.

I feel stupid because I can never determine or find what each months entries are supposed to be. Just like right now I've looked and cannot find what the January contest is for.  I would eliminate that and every month have an owner finished category and a Warmoth finished catagory. Basses would just be included in with the guitars. Not enough difference between them they are beautiful too. Also a Warmoth gift certificate would be a huge incentive for me.

It starts with an "r" and rhymes with baffle.  We've done those before  and is frowned upon by W.  They have more or less been outlawed.

I'd be happy with a gold sticker  :icon_tongue:

Additionally, maybe some sort of incentive for winning can be done.  The page banners are awesome but maybe we can partner with Warmoth, get a gift certificate for the winner.  Perhaps $25-50???  Seems like a minimal investment.  $25 a month is only $300 a year.

Uhhhh looks like I'm not the only one suggesting  a baffle. The person who originated the contest did too. So there ya go SuperTurbo.  Just saying Lol

Them giving a gift cert and a "baffle" or "waffle" are 2 different things. Even with a meaningless contest where the reward has been peer recognition, it has been full of criticism and nitpicking, not to mention multiple fake accounts to double and triple vote, I can't imagine a financial reward making this for fun, light hearted competition better.  No good deed goes unpunished.
