Just a FYI... Gibby is now using a form of micarta - I think its called Richlite.  Basically a recycled paper (yes recycled paper!) and phenolic resin.  Micarta - true micarta is a westinghouse item, a layered laminate.  I dont know which was first for micarta, but I've got actual Micarta from Westinghouse here for circuit boards and its a phenolic / fiberglass laminate, and tough as nails.  But..... I'd not want a fingerboard made of it.  I imagine refrets are going to be totally out of the question on the Richlite stuff.

So it's like Ebonol then?

Supposedly Ebonol is XXX paper phenolic.

I'll take a nice cut of wood over that crap any day of the week.  :dontknow:

I didn't make this response on the LPF, but..... there are a lot of good woods available - just look at what Warmoth is doing!

Sometimes I think Henry and the G-men are losing it more than we suspect.

Hmmm "Henry and the G-men".... now THERE's a band name for ya!

That's totally ridiculous to use phenolic, once the resin wears off it's some nasty stuff. About as bad as CF without the resin.. There's too many other substitute woods that are legal to obtain as raw materials...

depends on how they make the stuff... if its truly resin impregnated... it should be ok as far as wear goes... but... we all know that stuff is brittle to the max... makes maple and ebony look like chewin' gum.  Tone? Refret?  I shudder here.

OTOH... it should machine  well,  be a breeze to fret, and also yield some really nice players on account of that

yes it is hard and somewhat brittle, depending on the thickness but machines great but nasty and dirty as hell...

The last time I machined a "real" micarta slab, it threw sparks.  That's nasty.

Then again, teak wood throws sparks too!
