Whatever is old, hard to get, sounds better, especially if I have the last remaining stash.....

The old wood Gibson used... not really all that old.  We're not talking old fine fine grain spruce here with 30 rings per inch...

I'm not a fan of marketing/clique/urban-legend amp-guitar BS myself.

But let's not fool ourselves; there's marketing/clique/urban-legend amp-guitar BS on every board.

All you need in order for said BS to exist is one person/company (who has been anointed as "experienced/legit" by the clueless masses -
whether warranted or not) to put forth a concept, and enough arse-kissing from said clueless masses to make said BS qualify as "truth".

This is human nature - it happens anywhere there's an opinion involved.

well i agree mostly but as far as old wood goes there is a difference in grain density between old growth forests and what we get today but that doesn't apply to electric guitar but more to violins and such.

don't get me wrong old stuff sounded good but it may have been a matter of luck in some cases

This is sorta true.  Strads were made from trees that gre during a rare extended cold period, so the wood was *actually* a different density.  Wood matters, but i suppose that it varies more from piece to piece than age to age.

Well back on topic,  :laughing7: , what I gather from the three videos is that the Antiquity, Seth Lover, '59 and Pearly Gates are the range of the differences noted of the original PAFs. So if a slightly over wound PAF is what you think the originals sounded like, get the Pearly Gates. If you want true to original "design" specs, get the Seth Lover, etc. Also check the specs as I believe one or two of them are wax potted where the others aren't, and that make a difference in the tone also.

I'm a big fan of H.M.Pope.  Few new him better than Lucian Cary, who was a novelist and reporter, and who befriended and documented Pope's latter life.  I've had the pleasure of reading, and re-reading Cary's accounts with Pope (or Pyne through thin disguise).  The thing with Harry Pope did so eloquently, was to approach all the flooflah and urban legend of the shooting sports, and give them the test of science and engineering principle.  When someone would tell Harry, "thats the way it is", Harry would just set about to see if thats the way it was, or not.  He was like that with everything from rifle barrels to toasters.  It was is way, and Pope did change his feelings about things, when new technologies made the old principles obsolete - after being proven that is.

I'd like to think, in many ways, unknowingly, we encompass that same nature here.  There are so many trials being done every day on guitars and amps and such... by members and contributors here, its amazing.  The thing we have going for us - is that we mostly are taking ideas, and hoping they'll pan out.  If they do, we share our pride.  If they dont, we share our misery and search for a better way.  Thats what we do here.
