Getting a high gloss finish

i was always curious on how people achieved a nice high gloss glass paint job on there refinished bodies. I got my fender body back down to the bare wood after having to heat the poly with a heat gun to take it off ( man so much easier then sanding lol ) but i was wondering the best way to start the refinish. Wood sealer? then paint and after the paint what should i hit it with to get that glass effect.

In the military i had to strip and re wax a few floors lol and not knowing how to do it it took me 4 hours to figure out, after applying the wax buffing it and re applying the wax and again buffing it you can achieve a high gloss/glass effect. Does this also work with painting. Could i paint it buff it out hit it with a nice clear coat then buff again and clear coat it again and repeat or no?

If you are going to paint , I'd suggest  sealing the wood , a few coats of primer , sand to 600 , shoot the color with a few coats , sand to 600 , then clear coat .

I final sand with 800/1000/1200/2000  then use polishing compound to buff it out.

On a realted note, I recenty tried out some of those 3M Flexible Polishing Papers.
You can find them at StewMac.

I thought I'd give 6,000 grit a try, I was placing an order anyway and it's like $2.00 for a sheet.
Once I figured out which was the abrasive side (the fabric/fibery looking stuff is the back), I was very impressed.

It actually sands to a gloss finish using water.
I was able to use the pad AFTER the fine buffing compound to get out some remaining swirl marks (those really fine scratches that just seem to never go away).

Uber-shine!
