Yes, you could glue it in there, and yes, there's a lot of surface area, but what are you getting for your efforts?
I'll tell you what you're getting:
1. A less secure joint than bolts will afford you. Essentially, it's a lap joint, with a three-foot-long lever and five bass strings' worth of tension working against it.
2. A more difficult-to-repair joint than bolts will afford you.
3. A bigger problem than necessary just to attach the damn thing in the first place.
4. No tonal advantage.
5. No playability advantage.
I'd stick with the bolt-on. If you want to make it more secure, use threaded inserts. If you want to make it more attractive, recess the screw holes and use ferrules. If you want to improve access to higher frets, carve away some lumber on the body. All of these solutions are easier and more sensible than dealing with a glued-in neck that was intended to be a bolt-on.
