Floyd Rose Prep With or Without Mounting Holes?

What is the difference between the two options, and what are the advantages and disadvantages?

Thanks!

Ok, I thought you probably meant the neck but wanted to be certain.

The main difference is one is wood screws that go through the nut into the neck, this I would tend to think is found on necks where a Floyd has been retrofitted.

The other is where machine type screws go through the neck from the rear and then into the nut. Every factory equipped Floyd or similar equipped guitar I have owned has used this method. I personally think it's the most stable method of the two.

I have seen some claims that the rear mount method means there is less wood and can lead to weakness but it isn't something I have personally observed since around 85 when I got my first FR equipped guitar.

I have a tilt back headstock on my TFS6, with no volute, wizard type of profile.
The screws enter from the face, into the peghead, no "through holes".
It has worked consistently reliable for me for over 18 + years, just consider it as part of your routine maintenance & check it to make sure it's snug, and you should be fine.

Thanks for the replies guys  :icon_thumright: I'll probably go without the mounting holes, I've never really liked how they look anyway.

Depending on how much wankery you perform. Think about skipping the locking nut altogether.

A trem with locking tuners can be equally stable if set up right.

That's an idea :icon_scratch: I love having a locking nut, I've always had one and I don't like change!

+1 on this.  My next TFS designs are utilizing straight string pulls over Tusq nuts to locking tuners on a tilt back headstock.
Along these lines, something that you might consider as an option if you are using a straight headstock with a reasonably straight string pull ala strat/tele/warhead, and if you're using a 1 11/16" nut width would be to add the LSR Roller nut in conjunction with the locking tuners.  You'll get all of the same harmonics that you can get from a good steel locking nut without the maintenance and overly invasive install, and your open chords can sound like fretted chords.
