Hello, *newbie alert!* I went to reply to a thread and got the over 120 day notice, so I'm following recommendations and starting a new thread. Please excuse me if this is not the proper way of going about things.

The thread was in regard to having fine tuners on a trem with no locking nut. The post I was responding to read as follows:

True enough, but why would you want to?

To wit I replied:

Gibson has been putting fine tuners on stopbar tailpieces since at least the late 70s on the 25/50 Anniv Les Paul. It's also standard issue on a BB King Lucille model (as well as RD Artists some Vs and SGs; older Ibanez guitars too.) Why use one you ask? Well, just to cite one circumstance where it's come in handy: You're mid-song. You're slightly sharp. Do you a) Grab a tuning key and hope the string doesn't *plink* go too flat and require you bring it back up to pitch? or b) Give the fine tuner a perfect little twist? Now FWIW, I don't nor have I ever used one, but having encountered this situation can see the advantage over grabbing a tuning peg and hoping all goes right. Cheap tuning keys obviously can be to blame here, and I can see that point as well. But the case can be made for fine tuners' existence sans locker. It's the same basic principle as having them on violins.  :)

I totally agree, and it is what it is, a fine tuner.  It's for acquiring the precision that a standard headstock tuner cannot.

Welcome!

If it does that (*plink*) you got a case of a incorrectly cut nut.

A part from that I totally understand the use of fine tuners.
