I used Keda liquid dyes on the top. I tried to emulate the PRS northern lights finish but turned out a little different.
The back is grain filled with Aqua coat mixed with black dye.
Minwax gloss wipe on poly on the top and satin on the back. 5 or 6 coats on the top so far.

Nice look on the body. Dye color choice is great, and the contrast of the gloss top against the satin back really brings the flame.  :icon_thumright:

Looks really good. Nice choice of color, too. Looking forward to your progress pics.

$200 is not much once you see all the work, time and materials you need. Anyways... It's fun and rewarding!

True dat. If you enjoy doing it, that's one thing, but what Warmoth charges for finishes is a legit bargain, IMO.

And I'm not just an employee of Warmoth. I'm also a client.

Also: that's a GREAT looking finish, damian.  :headbang:

Awesome looks, very PRS-ish.
Northern Lights is a tough one to pull off: way too many layers of colors, many of which are unknown.

Your DIY stain is, at the very least, as good looking as the NL-style finish a pro did for my Stat body:

So, congrats! It looks awesome and I'm looking forward to seeing the completed build.

I'm thinking I need to glue some flame maple headplate on the headstock to match the body. Has anybody ever done that?

Happens all the time. It's called "veneer", and you can buy it in sheets of various sizes, some even with adhesive already applied. These guys sell bigger lots of it, while you can get smaller pieces that are probably more suitable for what you want to do here.
