First Neck - what typically needs to be done???

when i burning a neck and use a decal, i will level and apply decal as Cagey states.  I then use a satin poly and smooth with 0000 steel wool when dry.  It gives a nice finish that closely resembles the burning wood and protects the decal.

Thanks again to all who replied.  I burnished my roasted maple neck yesterday.  I am pleased with the way it came out.  I used 800, 1200, 1500, 2000 papers and 4000 3M polishing cloth.  The 4000 cloth greatly reduced the diffuse light scatter and therefore increased the luster to point that I wanted.

Roasted Maple really polishes up beautifully. I've done a number of them here, and it's fast becoming my go-to neck wood.

I'm new to this forum too - but I just had a Warmoth neck professionally set up using a PLEK machine, which is where a computer scans the neck and motorized files and saws file down the rough edges of the frets and file down the nut slots (which are only starter cuts on the necks you buy) to extremely precise, smooth tolerances for a really comfortable, smooth playing feel. The machine files the nut slots and adjusts the action based on your preferred string gauge and action height. It's really expensive, and it's hard to find shops that have these machines, but Crossroads Guitar Shop in Falls Church VA has one. Their basic PLEK setup runs at $225.00.

Same thing with me.. Took mine in for a fret leveling. He looked at it, And I was told to same my money. No need on a warmoth.
