Finishing Poplar

According to the woods section, poplar is usually finished in a solid color as it has a grey/green coloration.  I'm wondering what you finishing gurus would think about an attempt at a clear blue finish.  I'm thinking this might incorporate and blend with the grey/green coloration.  Any thoughts on this or other suggestions?

I'm not so sure the solid or nothing rule is true. Some of the poplar bodies on offer at the moment have lovely grains.

Clear Blue would be cool, how about a blue burst?

Blue burst would be very cool.  But for my first finishing project, I'd like to keep it nice and simple.
