Finishing headstock + painting

So I've recently acquired a jazz bass. The colour is not an issue (in terms of finding a match).

I have done many paint jobs before (models, repairs on other items) but never on guitars. I am wanting to have a matching painted headstock so was wondering what sort of paint is ideal for a maple neck + what sort of finishing technique is required?

Is it a car spray job or am I completely of the wrong track?

You will want to use the same finishing technique/supplies that the body was done with. What kind of Jazz bass is it? Nitro? Poly?

Its poly, inparticular its a squier vintage modified upgraded 77 but I've added some pups, pre amp, new bridge, tuners and nut.
