Wasn't sure which forum this should go in so I am dropping it in general.  Should you install ferrules before or after you finish the body?  I know that if you do it after you have to clean out the holes.  I figured if you installed them prior to finishing you would have a nice tight fit and wouldn't have to clean out the hole.  I am using the tru-oil finish if that makes a difference.

I've never installed any, but I don't see that it matters with an oil finish, but if I were doing a painted finish I'd put them in after.

FWIW, probably shoulda been in the hardware forum... :dontknow:

Definitely after finishing. Cleaning the holes is sorta optional, depending on how you're going to get them in. If you have a drill press or an arbor press, you don't need to clean anything. Just line 'em up square and push the little rascals in. If you're going to try to do it with a persuader, it might be slightly easier if you clean them. Be aware that cleaning them sometimes causes more damage than just trying to press past the finish.

Rather than clean them, some people advocate using a soldering iron to heat up the ferrule to melt past the finish residue, but that can have undesirable side effects later if you need to remove them for some reason. The melted finish will re-solidify and adhere to the ferrule, so that when you try to remove them you tend to pull finish up around the hole. Happened to Mayfly just recently as illustrated here.

Is there a way of moving this thread to the hardware section?

What is the reasoning for after the finish?  Is it just because if you pull them out it could cause damage?  Doesn't matter I guess.  I will put them in after.

One of the mods can do it; we can't.

You need to be able to sand/buff the back and that's very tough to do with ferrules installed. Plus, the finish will build up in and around them, which is NFG.

Ah, that makes sense.  Not sure why I didn't think of that.
