Favorite Tuning Machine?

I hate to disrupt your debate but what is Warmoth selling really? They say Schaller mini locking tuners. There is no such thing.

There are Schaller M6 locking tuners and that's what the picture in Warmoth shop shows.

Then there are M6 minis that are not locking.

And then there are M6 mini top locking tuners.

I suppose they are selling M6 locking tuners (first link and correct picture, but wrongly named throughout Warmoth site). But then again they are selling them individually which means you don't get a staggered set of 6. Which looks like this http://guitar-parts.biz/download/C260e2afeX12a1e87b2d3X179b/M6_Serie_2000_Klemm.jpg

Are there more sources of these Schallers (not counting counterfeit stuff from China) or is it all made in Germany?

Looking at technical drawings I also don't see why you'd need a hole with two different diameters.

Huh -- never noticed that about Warmoth's Schallers. Good catch! I mean, civilizations won't fall or anything, but straightening it out might save Warmoth from customer hassles later.

Way back when I first started my guitar obsession, Schaller were "the other brand" after Grover; Gotoh was just starting to make U.S. inroads. They've restarted their F-series block tuners in a nice range of finishes. But you really have to take a look at their DaVinci heads:

Heya, SustainerPlayer. Seems like we've accidentally kicked your favorite puppy, eh?

I admire complexity; good engineering is a thing of wonder. I once had a Rhodes with full-on double-locker, because I got a reasonable deal & figured, "what could it hurt?"

Well, seems like I spent more time tuning it than actually putting pick to strings. The vibrato was sweet but I could not get all the tensions balanced properly, so doing one thing (like bending a string) would mess everything else up & I'd have to start over. The one time I think I had it about right, a string broke. I finally sold the beast to a very appreciative player, for about what I paid.

That doesn't make either one of us wrong. He thought it was worth the effort -- in the end, I didn't. Lately I've been drifting back to stoptails, which doesn't mean I consider myself somehow superior to wang-bar maniacs. I've sold most of my effects pedals because I spent too much time knob-twiddling when what I really needed to do was work on my playing.

When I say something like "simpler is better," anyone reading it oughta know I mean "...better FOR ME," & most assuredly NOT "simpler is morally / existentially / karmically superior."

And the switches, the pots, the pickups, the frets, the neck, the finish ... it will all wear.

:icon_scratch: HUH?!? I though the whole goal was to make them so excruciatingly-beeyootiful that you were terrified of a even a single tiny little single little tiny scratch
AAARG IT'S RUINED
and consequently "had" to hang it on the wall and simply goon & moon over it for it's stupendous exoticity? You don't really... TOUCH these things, do you? :o

(shudder twitch barf)

Aw well, dear old grand-ma-ma always said the barbarians would win the final round. :-\

P.S. Have you noticed, that in lo these many months & years of natter & pontification, around here one thing you just NEVER see is a "relic'd" guitar? :toothy12: Something about "respect" and "all that work - right down the poopchute HUH?" Even that run of barndoors that showed up a few y. back - they were NEW old weathered barndoors, right? And that wormy one, it was apparent that couldn't have come from those slimy post-rainstorm sidewalk worms or like DANGER-WORMS or Ickworms, rather, more like Walt Disney-type adorable li'l cartoon worms.

But none of that "real-relic'd" dragged-behind-truck & buried-in-catbox and bizarre fingerboard wear patterns that (speaking kindly here) could only have come from participating in a 3-day sex orgy -
WITH METHED-UP KOMODO DRAGONS.

Boom-lacka-Boom-lacka-Boom-lacka Mow Mow, indeed.
