Has any one tried Reed James pickups?
http://www.reedjamescustom.com

For sheer looks, they'd do nicely in an exotic wood guitar.  But I wonder how they would fare in real-world application.  I've personally been dissapointed with plenty of guitar gadjets in the past when basing my deicision on looks alone.  But, guitar pickups are not complex creatures, Alnico copper and a few other things to season to taste.  My favorite pickup tones have come from more old-fashioned designs, I imagine these wouldnt be too far from the mark.  And I can't imagine how wood might effect the tone, if at all.

ps, this is my first post here, I'm in no way associated with Reed James pickups, and I've not yet built a Warmoth.  But I've lusted after their parts.  So far I just refinish my old fenders and squiers.

Pimp my guitar pickup!  :icon_biggrin:

Seriously, though, I don't see how using wood instead of the usual plastic/bakelite material is going to change the sound of the pickup.  :icon_scratch:

Also, I wonder what the effects of sweat, combined with a bit of dust, and shreds of plastic from the pick, will have on the wood (not to mention a possibility of spilt beer, or any other assortments of spilt food and drink)?

That's funny, and a good point.  At band practice we often have finger foods (a side benefit to having chicks in the band), but I've never dripped food into my pickups.  On one occaision, about 10 years ago, a band I was in played a gig where a bunch of drunk dancing people started spraying me with beer during a guitar solo (they were in a very good mood, what can you do but go with it?), years later I pulled off the pickguard and could still see evidence of the dried up beer.

But, really, how much sturdier wood is compared to plastic, or vice versa, doesnt matter.  They're under the strings.  And of all the damage my guitars have taken, the pickups have never been subjected to damage.  My kids dragged 'em through the house, denting and dinging them up.  I've thrown them for dramtic effect.  I've swung my headstock at the drummer's cymbals for grin's only to be mortified at the chunk of wood I effectively shaved off or gouged.  Never damage to the pickups if only for their safe location.

But back to the point....  where was I?  I forgot....

i love my woodbuckers the tone is off the hook and no damage i have seen to them yet and i am rough on my guitar and thy still look gorges
