I have an Epiphone Les Paul Custom that I'm growing more and more fond of the more I play it.  I've swapped out the pickups, but otherwise its stock.  A great playing and sounding guitar.  I traded my way into it.  They go for around $350 to $400 all day long on ebay.  Twice that new.  Well worth the price.

The OP was looking for less expensive alternatives whilst he saved up some $$$. Granted there are some Epiphone LP's out there that are decent players, but even on the higher priced models quality is all over the place and buying one unless you've picked up and played it, rather than picking up one off eBay/Craigslist sight unseen. The newer ones have absolute crap in them for pickups and electronics, so when you factor in having to buy/install new PUs/electronics they become much less of a bargain, which is why I always point people in that general price range to the PRS SE series. By the time you rework the Epi to be usable, the PRS SE winds up being cheaper...

Yeah, the PRS SE have decent pickups in them stock and I haven't seen one with a real bad setup.

i did find a Gibson les paul for around 600 but it was on craigs list lol so again i dont know whats wrong with it, now i wouldnt mind taking the time to re finish it but that puts me back to saving for a warmoth which from what i have heard is better quality then gibson but thats what i was told again i dont own either so i dont know

Well if it's on craigslist, go down and play it, if it stinks don't buy it, if it's good then get it. A $600 les paul that plays well is always going to be easy to re-sell if you want to later.

well its about an hour and a half away lol im trying to get the guy to meet half way so maybe next weekend we can get that done.

I hope it's not a Standard or better.  Just make sure its not a counterfeit.  $600 for a bonafide Gibson LP Std/Cstm in good shape is a bit fishy.

I hear you.  I was fortunate enough to get to check mine out before buying it, and it was just fine.  So were the pickups, for what they were, I just put those pickups in because I came into them and needed to use them.  Eventually I'll be putting the originals back in this guitar.  I've had several Epiphones over the years, Les Paul Standard, Casino, Dot, and SG.  And several of them had "2nd" stamped on the back of the headstock.  All of them were great playing guitars.

So my point that Epiphones are good guitars is one I'll stand behind.  In my experience, if you make sure it's set up and not just right off the palate, then an Epiphone will serve you very well until you can save the cash for your dream guitar.

I've also got an old Made in New York acoustic from 1944.  Even way back then, the quality was pretty good.
