EMG solderless jack

Hi,
I'm curious if anyone is aware of any damage that can occur to EMG pickups if the jack/battery tip and ring solderless plugs are reversed. I think i hurt my cheap speaker (very cheap) by plugging it in this way (squealed and sounds funny now). The diagram picture of the jack lugs was somewhat misleading and I made the mistake of trusting the way it was when I got the wiring used and connected in a bundle . Any feedback is great as I'm curious why the speaker got hurt from this. For future reference, could any damage be done to the pickups in this situation? They sound fine through a Mesa once I figured it out and switched the jack plugs. Thanks!

I cannot see how this would do any damage to the pickups as they were not the recipients of the wrongly wired output socket.

It sounds like the voltage from the battery was sent via the output to your cheap amp/speakers input which would not be what it was expecting.

If the negative and positive are reversed, that's just a polarity change, and is un-harmful.

Having a battery connection reversed with one of those could be harmful, but I've not experienced that to test.

I had a Carvin once with active pickups where something got fried from putting a battery in the wrong way. Should be able to prevent that problem with a diode.
