Back on topic, I've heard differing opinions on Mastodon live: some say they're great, others that they suck. Who to believe?

I don't know about Mastodon - but a lot of good bands have off nights. Sometimes someone's sick, or drunk, or high - or maybe the guitarist is pissed off that he can't hear himself in the mix, or everyone's pissed off at the drummer because he was late to soundcheck, or the lead singer's girlfriend is making everyone wear zodiac-themed costumes... and other times, everyone in the band is happy to be there, well rested, totally rehearsed, and ready to take on the world.
