I don't know how I missed this band! I reconnected with an old college buddy this past weekend, had a great time hanging out over a few beers talking about life, music, guitars, etc. and he asked me if I liked Mastodon's new album, I said I had never heard of them, and he was like WHAAAATT!?? Haha! I went out and bought their albums "Blood Mountain" "Crack The Skye" and "The Hunter", and so far I'm really digging the band! "Crack The Skye" is ridiculously good (in my own humble opinion haha!) reminds me a lot of the spirit of Led Zeppelin & some of the other epic albums of the epic years of rock&roll.

Anyway, It's late and I'm bored at work, just listening to good music, anyone else a fan of Mastodon?

I am...  :icon_thumright:

Saw them a couple of times live. Might not be the greatest live band ever, but their albums are all great.

I'm not a fan but my bandmates dragged me to the Ghost/Opeth/Mastoon show here in Atlanta last weekend. I'm still not wild on their music, but they were very impressive live. Plus they kept swapping out instruments, which was cool.

Yeah they've got some cool stuff, one of the guitarists for Mastodon uses a custom 9-string, and they use a 12 string a lot as well

I keep hearing I need to check these guys out. I'm a huge metal fan, so I'm looking forward to it...

Opeth is the tits. Not a Mastodon fan, though.

They toured here in Aussie land a few years ago, backing up Slayer.
Seen them on a Aussie Metal TV show a few times ......  :icon_scratch:  don't know why I even watch it.

As I'm NOT a metal fan at all  :icon_biggrin:

This bit I really just don't understand thou :icon_scratch:

not a comparison, they remind me in a similar spirit of the Zep a bit because they are doing their own thing against the grain of the typical american metal band, Like Zep did back in the day. definitely have their own unique sound, kind of a nod to the greats of the 70's etc.

anyway, they have their own unique sound, and I dig that.

Definitely a fan. I'll be seeing them for the first time this summer at the big summer music festival we have here (also present will be Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, the Tedeschi Trucks Band, the Offspring...) and I am super stoked.

And I kinda get the Zep thing. No, they don't sound like Zep, but they've certainly got the swagger and the stomp and the groove when they want to.

Ok Thanks I get it now  ........ think I'll go crawl into a hole  :toothy11:

No I didn't think you meant they sound like them.
I may-be in the over 50's  :icon_biggrin:  but I listen to all sorts of music still.  :party07:  :guitarplayer2:
Except 3 .... Country / Disco / Opera  :laughing7:
Can asure you the 70's was a great era too  :headbang:

I'm with you, I do love me some Opeth

I've been listening to them for years, and for my taste, the "classic rock" tone the last couple of albums is not as appealing as their earlier albums to me. Brent hinds (one of their guitarists) has even said he is tired of metal and wants to play classic rock. Check out "Remission" (very heavy, "march of The Fire Ants", "Motherpuncher") and the later "Blood Mountain" (still heavy but catchier hooks when they started to get big, "The Wolf Is Loose", "Crystal Skull"), but their classic album to me is the Moby Dick themed "Leviathan", the whole thing is awesome. I agree, great live band, seen them 5 times as they've progressed from little dive bars to big venues. 2007, time I saw them was in a bar with Priestess, Mouth of the Architect and a couple hundred people- best show of the bunch.

I just got Blood Mountain & Leviathan yesterday, both excellent albums! I like the heavier, more modern edge to both those albums, but I must say I really like the "classic rock" flavor of their new stuff, it's a refreshing change from what a lot of the other american metal bands are putting out these days.

with all that said: I've listened to Leviathan 3 times since I got it yesterday, It's my favorite of all their stuff, the concept of the album, guitar tones, song structures etc. Killer album!

Also, Moby Dick was one of my all-time favorite books as a kid, maybe that's why I like Leviathan so much! haha

I know what you mean, that adds a lot to it. I read all of Melville's stuff when I was an english major back in college, so I'm sure that has a lot to do with it. But from the burst of "Blood And Thunder" and power of "Seabeast" to the changes in "Aqua Dementia" and "Joseph Merrick", it's a great album even without the theme. "Blood Mountain" after that has a bunch of great video friendly singles, but that will probably always be their pinnacle for me. Glad you're enjoying them the way I did though, it's some great music. The "Call of The Mastodon" disc with all their stuff before Leviathan when they had another guy (Eric Saner) as vocalist is even heavier. "Shadows That Move", "We Built This Come Death" and "Where Strides The Behemoth" off that one are still 3 of my favorite songs by them. You can tell when I was really into them if you look in the VIP section here, since I named my build "Motherpuncher".  :icon_thumright:

I've seen your VIP, it's killer!! Haha, now the name makes sense.  :headbang:

+1 on Leviathan. That one seems to be the Mastodon record I always end up listening to.

I wish they'd remake Moby Dick as an epic R-rated gorefest (for historical accuracy) and use that record as the soundtrack.
