I'm sure there are other new guys like me that have never installed tuners on a new neck. I thought I would post my experience and hopefully it will be helpful to others.
First thing I did was to throw out the #2 wood screws that came with the tuners. I purchase some #2 x 3//8" stainless steel sheet metal screws. The screws measure .085" diameter. I drilled a .070 pilot hole using a #50 bit into a piece of maple. Using beeswax as a lubricant the screw went in with no problem and seemed like a good fit. I intentionally kept spinning it down trying to break it or strip the threads. It just kept going down depressing the head down into wood and did not break or strip. So, from my limited experience, I think this combination of pilot hole size, using beeswax and this particular screw size may help another newbie not break his tuner screws off in the headstock.
Hope this helps someone.
