It kinda makes you take for granted how many sound effects were created by musical instruments in the very early days of film and TV, with Warner Brothers and Hanna Barbera being the most obvious examples.
There are certainly no rules when it comes to sound design!
 
No kidding.

It's one of the reasons I love cartoons. They exaggerate the hell out of everything, often creating sounds to imitate atmosphere or typical environmental noises. Frank Zappa was pretty good at it, and used it extensively on his "Overnight Sensation" and "Apostrophe" albums. Of course, he usually had some orchestrals involved that could pull that sort of thing off effectively. I mean, how many rock bands have glockenspiels and xylophones in the ranks?
