Guys, I think this is an offshoot from another thread in NECK WOODS where a Phish fan posted a pic of his Languedoc copy, and talked a lot about it. I posted a response to his original question, then I teased him saying "Your Hero worship is showing" since his guitar was an exact copy of Trey Anastasio's, and he took it the wrong way. He ripped me up one side and down the other, so I deleted my post. Then I reworded my post, but asked a question about his guitar, which he took the wrong way again and ripped me up one side and down the other. So I deleted my post. I responded with another post that had "LOL" as every other word, since the guy started every other sentance that ripped me with "LOL". But after 5 minutes I deleted that post too since I didnt want to egg him on, and it was rude. He's since deleted his account. Bigsby 101 posted in there too, I forget what he posted, his post is gone too. If I recall, Bigsby101 had some some harsh criticims for me. Its a great example of how easily it is to misread someone on the internet. It kinda sucks, the dude was obviously a hardcore Phish fan, and I'm a fan of Phish as well.
The thread I'm refering to:

Open Letter To Bigsby101.
You are partially correct. Read on and you'll see what I mean. My goal was to create a guitar that suited my needs and reflected my own personality and playing style.
But let me just say a few things about how they sound and why I went with Reed James Customs, since you take issue with that aspect of the guitar... not to beat a dead horse, since your posts have been deleted.... and i invite you to send me a PM if you have any criticisms that run the risk of being deleted, as I never saw your post regarding my guitar, I'm only reading it in the quotes from others.
This is my third set of Reed James pickups. The first was a set of woodbuckers that I put on a Les Paul Custom, the second is a set I put on my thinline. In both cases, before installing the pickusp I recorded a series of tracks playing chords first, the lead licks. I did it several different ones either clean, overdriven, distorted etc. I saved the settings on my recording units modeler. Then I installed the pickups and played the same chords and lead licks on the exact same settings with the Reed James pickups installed in the guitars.
Part of this excercise was to have some tonal comparison on the Reed James Custom pickups. I did not want to sacrifice tone for looks. This was very important to me, it still is, if the original pickups sounded better, I would have loaded them back into the guitars and sent the pickups back to Reed James Custom. Not to sound like a commercial, but even the bassist and the keyboardist/vocalist in my cheesy little cover band commented at how much clearer and smooth my guitars sounded with the new pickups (we do B-52s, Beatles, Cheap Trick, Jet, The Killers, The Grateful Dead, Stray Cats, etc, we're cheesy). So I don't think I was listening with my eyes. Bassists and vocalists are not known for their love of guitar gear minutia.
So when Reed James Custom started developing wood covers for their P-90s line, well.. I wanted to be one of the first to have a set. I sold a bunch of stuff on Ebay to make this guitar happen. This guitar, being an original creation, did not have another set of P-90s to do a comparison test with like the others. So, if there are other P-90s out there that you think sound better, then I encourage you to use them. But these suit my needs just fine. Wound to "vintage" specs, not too many winds, both Alnico II and V magnets, simple.
In fact, I am a total idiot when it came to drilling the potentiometer holes. I was afraid I might crack the top, so I went with one volume and one tone instead of two volumes and two tones. And look at the placement of the toggle! I was super cautious, I tried to stay as far from the F hole as I could. But... OOOOPS!!! The tone knob is so close to the jack that the tip of the jack bumps into the back of the pot. DOH! So the tone knob is there for looks only, its not wired in. I have figured a way to wire it in, but it would turn backwards, but I'll do that some other time and declare it the "Splash mod" (
uh, that's my nickname from 21 years back, select friends still call me that... ah the effects of Vodka on an 18 year old).
So... You see, I sacrificed my TONE KNOB for the sake of looks. It does nothing but cover a hole. I did not actually sacrifice the tone of the guitar. I'm sure MP3s recorded in a hurry, and bounced from one peice of gear/computer to another doesnt really reflect what I hear in the same room as the guitar. So I can see how it might sound like elephant dung to you. Heck, if your laptop is anywhere near as crappy as mine, then you must think I'm deaf. Everything sound aweful on my laptop.
I have more aspects of this guitar that I was an idiot about, but I'm at work and the work is piling up. Perhaps I'll post later about how I cracked the body almost in half less than 24 hours after it was delivered. Thank heavens for clamps and woodglue.
Anyways. No hard feelings. I used to have a MIM standard strat, and they do sound great.
Cheers
Chris
