Well...did some dumpster diving yesterday at a local cabinate shop and came across these gems.  The big cabinate door is solid maple that had some finish issues. The other is some other wood I cannot place but has a cool veneer.

I plan on making a multi laminate neck -thru body design with a box shaped design.  Not sure what scale I will use.  I may model it after the 3/4 size strat my son has....it would make a cool travel guitar if it works!

I will likely order a PU and bridge from guitar fetish if I cannot get anything on ebay....

here is an update...

1st shot is of the neck board glued together

2nd is of the lam top after some touching up

3rd is the body back and sides.

4th is the neck after some "shaping"

Too cool! This is gonna be fun to watch.

Y'know, a project like this is the perfect excuse to buy some fretworking tools. Fretwire's cheap. Surprisingly so, considering what a good fret job costs. But even SS fretwire is only about $10 for a neck's worth, and it only goes down from there. So, you build a couple low-ball "contest specials" to get your ducks in a row, and you're not destroying perfectly good necks learning how to work the stuff.

yeah...I agree...I was going to use something like a wire hanger for frets...then I saw fretwire is only going to cost me about $9.  Just have to do a little research the righ size groove to cut.

did some more work on the neck.  It is look rough but I only have an old table saw, hand sander and router to work with.  It will get there.

I also made my 1st purchases:

GFS NYIII pickup...$21 on their website in the clearance section
1 5/8 nut...$2 on ebay

I will likey but some econ tuners ($20) and bridge ($10) from GFS.  I will also get some fret wire ($10) from StewMAC.

I am thinking I can get it all done for $75.

BTW...I am mounting the PU someplace between the neck and bridge position.....

Sweet, it'll be like a Stingray guitar. One humbucker right in the sweet spot.

Great that you decided to use real frets on it :)

Beside the box shape idea, this is nice! :P

Yeah...I neither had the equipment or time to do a full on body.  I will see how this plays and maybe try it for real someday.

besides...I am making this 3/4 size,  dimentions based on my son's beginner strat from squire...I figure if would make a nice travel electric if it really works.

I did some sanding today and the profile of the neck is really nice.  I hope the quartersawn maple, thicker profile, smaller scale and thin strings really prevent the neck from bending too much...we shall see...

here is the shape of the headstock...take a looks at those burns...I think it is a combo of the wood being hard and blades being dull!

Looks like that was a deep cut. Even a brand new blade will heat up pretty good if you go too fast or try to take too much at once, regardless of the wood. Hardwoods, of course, will often exacerbate the problem. Doesn't look serious, though. Oughta sand right out.

not real concerned...just want to to play.  I do not expect to win...just have some fun.

There are a few SERIOUS builds here...I am going after that bo d. square look.....

more sanding and glueing.....

The headstock toruend out well and I got all the burns and grooves out.  I debaged making it a square like the body but decided it needed some shape to it.

As you can see this is my version on a "neck-thru" design.  Just waiting on same parts from Stewmac and GFS and wrap it up.....

getting it together...check out the figure on the middle section of the neck!

not much of a finish here...just some minwax stain and spray gloss poly.  It needs buffed...obviously going for that distressed look....since it is.  I let my 12 year old sand the old finish stoping him about 1/2 way thru so I would still have some of the old finish on when I stained...

I hope the rest of the parts have arrived when I get home.

One good part is it fits in my suitacase...If it plays well...it will make a nice travel electric that I do not care if it get banged up.  Also...the hollow body should should OK when it is not pluged im.
